HR vs Nurse Recruiter

Published

Probably a stupid question but what exactly do each of them do?

Is the application process usually HR > NR > NM?

I'm a foreign new grad applying for that coveted first job so I'm not that familiar with the process here. I'd love to know please, especially so I'll know what to expect during interviews (e.g. do I get behavioral questions in HR interviews?) Thank you!

HR typically does the initial screening of applications as well as the administrative components.

The NR will select and prioritize candidates, send the info into the managers. The managers will decide who they want to see.

The NR will contact them, do a screening interview before passing them on to the manager. Either party may, or may not, utilize behavioral interview questions.

Thank you!

So after HR interviews you, is that when the NR usually takes over with finding a manager for you to interview with?

There are usually 3 interviews, then?

If there is a nurse recruiter, who will be a part of HR, they will probably be the first to interview you. And my experience is that the NR won't see you unless a manager requests it first.

But, every place does it a bit different.

There is absolutely no standardization in either HR infrastructure or the actual employment process - it will vary by facility. Many organizations do not even have nurse recruiters or if they do, that may just be an HR generalist - not a nurse. In most organizations, HR is responsible for complying with all of the Federal & State employment law statutes. This may be a bewildering bunch of balderdash to us 'outsiders', but non-compliance can have very serious consequences.

Don't hesitate to ask questions about the employment process. If an organization cannot/will not answer you, it's probably not a good place to work.

Thank you very much for your responses! I sort of understand it now, but I'll be sure to ask the organization about their employment process. Thanks again!

Definitely ask. The places I have applied go like this: you apply, a nurse recruiter contacts you and interviews you by phone, the nurse recruiter passes your resume onto the nurse manager, you get interviewed by the nurse manager, and then HR extends you a job.

Although - recently I applied somewhere else, received a phone call just to clarify my resume (exactly how much experience I had, exactly what type of patients I saw in the unit) and then they said they would pass on my info to a nurse recruiter. I guess that must have been a HR person, but it wasn't really an interview because they didn't ask me anything besides just resume-clarification questions.
