I am trying to decide if it is better to work 3 twelve hour shifts a week or 4 eight hour shifts. Any opinions out there? This is for a labor and delivery unit.

There is one hospital around here that's offering 7 days on with 7 off. But I'm not sure if that's 12 hour shifts though. I think that would be absolutely draining.>>
We have a facility here that offers 7 days on with 7 days off. I couldn't imagine 7 straight days without a break from the place. lol

The 7/70 program is at the hospital I work at, however, our Birth Center has opted to stick with traditional 8 and 12 hour shifts. The 7/70 shifts are 10 hours long and there is some overlap of shifts. Day schedule is 07-1730, PM's is 1230-2300 and noc's is 2230 to 0830.

I'm hoping to land a position in same day surgery from 6:30am to 2:30pm. That makes the job 5 days a week BUT you don't do weekends and you don't do holidays.
I am doing 12 hr shifts now so I can see the appeal of those, but for me anything more than 8 hrs. is just too long.

I did 12 hr days on orientation for the first few months and I couldn't wait to get off! I begged to be put on nights.
Yes, some nights there is an overwhelming urge to sleep between 3am-5am, it's very annoying when that happens because I must get up and get busy and sometimes that is the time that I have set aside for paperwork. But that usually only happens on the first night back after being gone for awhile if I didn't take a nap before going in and had a busy day. Otherwise, I'm ok.
It's funny too because I am NOT a night person at all. I have always slept 10pm-6 or 7am normally and that is the schedule I have on my days off most of the time.

Staying busy definitely helps, but even when I am busy (with paperwork, etc), there are times between 3 and 5:30 or so when I know I am asleep even though my eyes are open. It isn't a safe feeling. I'm glad I'm not going to do nights for long.
