Hows Toronto treating all their nurses???

Published

Hi

I'm looking to relocate to Toronto from Western Ontario area. I am wondering how are working conditions for nurses in the Toronto area. I have an interview with UHN next week and would appreciate any feedback regarding this topic.

Thanx

I would recommend Sick Kids', Mount Sinai, St Micheal's and Sunnybrook. I have never worked at or know anyone who has worked at any of the other hospitals.

Specializes in NICU.

I have been at "Women's College" ( part of Sunnybrook) for 16 years and love it. Sick Kid's is exciting but non-unionized. I have a few friends who have fled that scene...

I worked at Sunnybrook for 1 1/2 yrs before I got married and moved to the U.S. Although I worked hard there, I liked where I worked, and I have a friend who worked at UHN for a couple of years before she moved south. She kinda liked it. If you want a unonized hospital, then don't go to Sick Kids. I still remember when they laid off veteran nurses years ago because they didn't have their BSNs...dumb.

Where/what is UHN? I have a couple of friends who were affected by that lay-off a few years back by HSC...it seemed more like they got rid of the "higher-paid" (top of the pay scale) nurses...the ones with experience vs. ones without degrees. Realistically, if it's degree nurses they were after, they only had to request the nurses obtain their degrees/work towards it to continue to be employed there. I agree...dumb.

UHN= University Hospital Network. UHN is made up of the 'old' Toronto General Hospital(aka The Toronto Hospital), Princess Margaret Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital. Those three hospitals merged together in the past 10 yrs, basically because they were forced to by the government. And you're right, the hospial could've told the nurses to go back to school but they obviously couldn't wait for their nurses to do that...I guess that's what happens when nursing unions aren't present in a hospital :angryfire

My friend got a job at Sick Kids as a Diploma nurse. She was encouraged to get her BSN and they will reimburse for it.

I have nothing good to say about Toronto and how they treat their nurses. The nursing system in Ontario in general has been a big disappointment to me.

Could you please explain why you were so dissapointed?

Congratulations to your friend...had she tried to get a job there back in the 90s she wouldn't have been so lucky. Apparently they've learned they can't be picky with a nursing shortage now, too bad they had to learn this the hard way.

Please explain further, I'm interested in what you have to say.
