How do u like day/evening shift?

Published

I'm doing days/evenings.........wondering how u guys liked it. Just wanted to have normal sleep schedule and not have to put my body under even more stress! I start my first "real" day 7a-7p monday.......after a week of classroom orientation so I'm kind of excited and kind of scared......its ona medsurg.tele floorso I know its busy......the nurses even said "put on your walking shoes, its a busy floor", I'm getting scared........some people say nights are slower and easier but I know that nights can be busy just like days.........regardless, I chose day/evening and I want to know who u feel.........I know u make less, but thats ok. I'm going back to school in a year to get my masters to be an NP, so I think a challenging medsurg floor is great for giving me foundation not only as a nurse but future NP.......7 more weeks of orientation to go!

Specializes in here and there.

i have no experience there but i got offered the job at a huge well known hospital and turned it down. I just cannot handle night/days.messes up my head..esp being a new grad!

I had an option of 7a-7p versus night or weekend only and i chose 7a-7p. I'm glad i did because I'm enjoying it! I'm not a night person. I like my sleep! Hats off to those who do it! some are just so used to it. You have to really like it to be able to cope. And like you, I have plans for further studies next year. Enjoy your new job!

I just started working nights (7 p to 7 a) in May. I love it! I hate getting up early in the morning, I would be tired all day, and come home and sleep on the couch most of the night. Now I try to work my 3 in a row b/c it's much easier. The first day I nap about an hour or so before I go in, and my last day I come home, I make myself get up about 12 or 1 so I'm tired that night for bed, and am back on a regular up during the day and sleep at night schedule.

I also like night because it's quieter and easier for me to learn. It's busy, but not chaos like day shift on our unit. I really enjoy it!

individual thing try it for a while and if you feel that it doesn't suit you ask for a transfer or look for something else

I will be starting on a med/surg/stepdown/tele floor in a couple weeks. I will be on 7a to 7p and I know that will be the busiest time of the shift. I am newly graduated and scared to death. I am excited all at the same time. I just hope everything works out. I don't know anyone that works there and am nervous about the whole thing. I am just so scared. I can't work nights, my husband works nights, and I have kids. I think nights would be easier to some extents, but then the sleep thing..... I am just very nervous.

I did most of my orientation on days, and even though it was busier, it worked out okay. I had an excellent preceptor who took her time with me, and I hope you do to. If you feel like things are moving too fast, be sure to let them know. They should ease you into it since you are a new grad. And even after orientation, they shouldn't slam you with all highly acute patients. Try to stay calm...things should work out for you!

Thank you, I hope it will work out too. I plan to be VERY positive and do my very best!!

I just graduated in May and took nclex and passed. Accepted a job at a hospital but the only hours offered for new grads were 7pm-7am on a med surg floor. I will be orientating during the day shift and after 9-12 weeks move to nights. I am a day person so nights may be very difficult for me. I talked with several nurses and they seem to schedule three days in a row and have 4 days off. I just hope it doesn't screw up my body too much. Keep me in your prayers. So far my lst preceptor is not that good. I will rotate with two other nurses and hopefully they will take me under their wing and show me things.

Our facility requires that we rotate days and nights which can be tough on the body. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. On days the full management team is there in all their glory to bust our chops. There is a flurry of residents and attendings on the unit which is kind of nice. We do love our docs and generally have a great working relationship with them. Resources are available for linens, computer, dietary, etc. Unit routine is fast paced on days. There's a lot of patient teaching and family counseling and hand-holding. Nights are more laid back. There are no families to contend with. The suits are gone for the day. It's quieter and one can be more focused on patient care. One of the nightly routines I'm so not fond of is patient bathing. We do our own as we don't have nursing assistants on the unit. And when 4am comes around, I want to sleep. My eyes start getting heavy and my energy level is completely sapped. There's not enough coffee in the world to help get the engine running again. Once I caught myself nodding off at the wheel on the way home. Scary! Sleeping days is not the same as a good night's sleep in my book. It's not as restful.
