Hi, Im from MA and I have a phone interview with a hospital in VA tomorrow at 1!. They said they would start with a phone interview because I am so far away. Has anyone gone through one of these and have any advice on how to stand out during this. I graduated one week ago and this is my FIRST interview ever I am so scared! Also, I know a few of my friends who have applied to this hospital and had interviews with emails later saying they are not hiring new grads. How do you politely ask if they are serious about hiring you? because flights are expensive!! Any advice would be helpful thanks so much!!

I find it helps if you have certain things written, such as the types of clinical rotations you did while in school, as well as any healthcare related job experience you may have. This helps to avoid awakes pauses while on the phone, lol. As far as traveling to a job interview , I am totally on your side because I drove to two interviews and when I got there I found out at least 5 other people were interviewing for the same job! I really suggest you (tactfully lol) ask before you book a flight. Good luck!

Basic tips to keep in mind:

-Try to do this in a quiet room where distractions are eliminated. These distractions can include pets, electronic gadgets, and anything else that can divert your attention.

-Have copies of the job description and your resume nearby for easy reference.

-Use a reliable phone line. Don't use a cell phone if reception is spotty.

-If you think of questions before the interview, write them down so you don't forget them in the heat of the moment.

-Practice answering some basic interview questions with a trusted friend. Helps you prepare answers for common questions and reduces anxiety. Lists of questions can be found on multiple websites, plus I think there's an article series somewhere on this site.

-Go ahead and talk like you're in an in person interview. Use body language, smile, etc. While not seen, it can come across in the way you speak.

You're probably on the phone now, so I won't send anymore tips (plus, the other two pretty well have it covered), but I wanted to say good luck! I hope the interview is going well! Be sure to post a follow up!
