How to put job offer on hold while considering others?

Hi everybody - not that I have a job offer yet in this economy but......I'm trying to be positive. I have filled out a few applications and know that it's possible to get an offer before having time to meet with another facility's interviewer. So......anyone have any suggestions about how to politely ask for a week (?) or a few days to consider the offer or longer??????? Tricky.. Thanks much

Well, I guess I'm an old-fashioned new grad... when I say, "I accept" it means just that... I will show up for my first day of work. It's an honor thing, you know? I keep my word.

well then, you answered your own question. I have no problems accepting then declining if something better comes along

I posed no question; I made a simple statement of fact. In my book, a person's word counts for something...

People who follow your way of doing things avoid the risk of being blacklisted at the employers they left high and dry. A good practice in today's economy.

Well, that depends. I'd rather the hospital have to find someone to replace me (which in this economy they easily can) than me be without a job for 6 months because they rescinded my offer due to economic circumstances.
