How to pay for LPN or RN school

Hello to all respondents/readers,

I'm looking for some help/advice. I totally screwed up the student loan agreement I had when I went to school to become a M.A., so now I have a wage garnishment for the next 2 1/2 years (but I'm ok with that, since it is a debt I owe, and this actually makes it easier to pay). Thing is, I really want to go back to school to become a LPN or RN. Does anyone know how I can qualify for some type of aid, as paying out of pocket is not an option (family, etc.)? I REALLY, REALLY need to go back to school, as I can't advance any more as a M.A. (I'm the "medical assistant/medical secretay/referral specialist" at my current job-1 of 4 medical assistants/medical secretaries, but the ONLY referral specialist {although others can muddle thru this task}; I'm also in-charge jointly of the lab and its needs, and of ordering vaccines and other needed medical supplies for 3 different departments in our office)!!!!! CAN SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE ASAP??!!

I work for a LTC that has a scholorship and I have to work for 1 yr after graduation. Also, the school I go to has tuition forgivness if you will work for that hospital for I think 2 years after graduation.

Thank you both for your responses. I think you may have misunderstood me,though. Because of my current wage garnishment, I've been told that I wouldn't be able to qualify for any grants or loans. Is there some other way to pay for school, barring my leaving my current position (I kinda like my seniority and other benefits right now) and starting over somewhere that pays for school?:o

what you've been told is correct:

because of student loan default and subsequent wage garnishment, you are unable to get any government loans....not many people are aware of this fact.

you may be eligible for private loans, but expect higher rate as credit risk. it may be more prudent to wait to payback defaulted loan. if you can scrape together enough money to make one extra payment every 3-4 months, then monies repaid more quickly (easier said than done).

i can second this, and speaking as a former lending professional, a default, government student loan will negatively effect your future ability to borrower more than a bankruptcy ever will, and will last until it's paid off.

the only way you can go for free, but you'll still need to pay for books and uniforms, etc out of pocket, is to find a hospital affiliation with a particular school where you sign a contract each semester and they waive the tuition, and you agree to work for them x number of years.

you can do private loans, as stated above, but the rates that i have seen on this board are through the roof, and when you add that kind of risk, they'll ding you so much in the rate, a credit card might be cheaper.

Thank you all so much for your help and advice. :idea: Does any one in the Philadelphia PA area know of any hospitals (or even LTC's) that are willing to pay for nursing school (RN or LPN), if a person is willing to committ to working for them after graduation, even during schooling if necessary? I'm willing to leave my current job and start anew (within certain boundaries) if needed.

Yes Brandywine Hospital in Chester County but I think you have to go to my school Brandywine school of nursing. It is a ADN 2 year program.

Lehigh Valley Hospital, LVH.org | Your LVH will pay for your school. They have grants through Northampton Community College and Lehigh Carbon Community College. Competition to get in either school is pretty stiff though.

In return for the grant which is tuition +$500/semester for books, incidentals, you owe one year.

They paid for my school and I like working there very much.
