I want to go back to school but I can't justify the cost since I am still paying on my loans. But, if I wait, the degree won't have much of a return on investment.

Also there are numerous "loop holes" that can make it impossible. For example most of my student loans were run up during my ASN and over 100 hours towards pharmacy.  Even though I went on to get a BSN, PMHNP which I paid out of pocket I was told that only loans accrued in the process of getting a BSN (non of my 150K) were eligible.

I was replying to employer tuition programs. They have specific criteria that you either meet, or don't. And they still have the right to approve or deny. It sounds as though you're talking about loans, which those all have criteria for acceptance or denial as well

Also the employer programs have strings attached. Thus, had I taken the HCA assistance for my PMHNP (which cost me about 15K out of pocket) they would have required me to remain employed for 2 years after the last period of payment.  Even if they didn't have an NP job. Thus, I would have likely remained in my 60K per year bedside RN job with no benefits.  For me this would have meant a loss of income 250K (current income) -60K (previous RN salary/hourly)- 15K in tuition reimbursement (which I didn't take). Thus the "assistance" would have resulted in a 175K loss (taxes would reduce that number but still it would have been quite a bit). Not to mention even if you offered me a cool one billion in cash I would not have stayed another day at an HCA facility unless I could buy it and experience the pleasure of destroying it brick by brick with a sledge hammer.
