How much do they let you customize your program/select your clinicals at your school?

Published

I just had orientation and learned that we'll have 180 hrs of clinicals first semester that are randomly chosen for us. Second semester, we get a choice between various types of surgery and general medicine at a couple different hospitals. Third and fourth semester we have a wide range of options (I'll be able to choose inpatient psychiatry first semester and outpatient psych/substance abuse the next, since my interest is mental health). We rank our choices for clinicals and hopefully get our top choice (though, if your top choice is peds it's less likely you'll get it, since so many people want peds).

How does this work at your schools??

Specializes in Pediatrics.

We have 3 options, and we get to pick from those. With a small cohort with maybe 10-12 people who have to drive 30-60 minutes to campus, site selection got rather catty. I ended up picking the site furthest from my house because I wanted to leave the option that is easiest for the longest commuters open and I had clinical at the second option this past semester and was not impressed.

we are allowed to pick a location that we would prefer-location not a specific hospital. We are also allowed to chose our preference of day or eveining clinical-note the time and location are not guratneed, the school will try to meet your preferences but no promises are made

we get an email telling us what clinical group we're assigned to, the dates and who else is in our group...
