I am in A&P 1 for the first time this semester. 90% of the class is taking it for at least the second time. One lady is in there for the 4th time! No disrespect intended, but how many times do you have to take this class in order to pass? Yikes! Is something wrong with this picture?

I teach A & P at the community college, and I've got students that have taken it multiple times as well. My belief, and I have shared it with some of them, is that retaking it over and over again may help you to get into nursing school (get a more competitive grade), but it won't help you once your in. You only get one shot at the actual nursing classes, if you don't do well, you will have to apply again....don't count on the second chance. I think allowing them to take it repeatedly does a poor job of preparing them for their real challenge which is nursing school. This could be one reason our graduation rates are so low.

I am currently enrolled in A&P 1 for the 1st time, but it is HARD! I studied my tushie off, and I did not feel confident after our test today. But many, many in the class have taken it before. For some this is the 2nd time around, for a few more it's the 3rd time or as you mentioned 4th. I am worried, but try to stay psoitive. I guess at least twice is the norm!
I wonder if how many times that people take A&P is also taken into consideration when applying for nursing school?
I hope to get a good enough grade the first time, but I do understand that things happen.
I can understand taking it twice, but three to four times?!?!
The funny thing is that these are the same people that are constantly late to class and do not show up for lab the second half of class. hmmmmmmm.... :stone
Some schools take it into account, but the DCCCD does not unfortunately...

Most schools I and my friends have attended average grades with a repeat, or only allow one, or both. That seems to make sense. I took it once and got an A, so with hard work it definitely can be done.

I'm not a fan of re-taking classes, a second time would be ok I guess but surely not more than that. I like the policy at the CC where I'm applying for my LPN to RN bridge because they subtract points if you have taken the class more than once and I think that is fair. The thing that annoyed me about the multi-retakers was that most of them will never get accepted into the nursing program anyway and most of them were also taking these classes multiple times on the goverment's tab.

I have people in my class who are taking it for the second time. There is specifically this one girl in my class who is taking it for the second time and does not seem to really care because she comes into class and will go to sleep or do homework for another class. It gets on my nerves because she expects to do well on her exams and lab practicals, but doesn't study and then she wants to know how I am making good grades on my exams. I study my butt of to get my grades.

I haven't ever had to re-take a class (yet) and I am half-way thorugh th actual RN program. Things happen in life and I can see needing to re-take something once or maybe even twice (though this should be rare). If you can't get the information down by then, you may not have the aptitude for this field. Maybe you do, maybe you don't, but at some point you have to get into the mind set that you only have one chance to succeed because this is how the nursing program works. You also have to have a solid foundation in the sciences to succeed as a student nurse. This is just my opinion though, and while i would say that my opinion supports what I have seen at school it is unscientific.
There are several in my class that show up late, sleep, sit in the back and giggle. Then they do not even bother to show up for lab. Out of about 22 students, about 8 showed up for lab. So our instructor gave us a pop quiz.....one question....and here it is....What is your instructor's name? That quiz went for bonus points for the upcoming test. lolololol
Those other people are only hurting themselves, so it does not make me mad. We have even had some whip out their cell phones during class. What is up with that?

One thing that did make me mad is that our school is so packed and everybody wants to be in one of the health sciences programs so they need Chem and A&P and these people fool around and retake the classes and take up spots every quarter. Makes it hard to get into the class. The administration was looking into cutting down the amount of times you can take the same class in succession to 2.

I think you answered your own question. Unless science simply isn't for you (and for some it really isn't), you should have to take it ONCE. Show up to every class, pay attention, and STUDY. That's it.
We don't have any students like that in our class, but we are also all older students that either already have a degree, or have been working for years. We don't have the time, energy, or money to goof off. That's why I chose the "weekend only" class. It meets once per week (giving the normal mon/wed or tues/thurs class in one day). It's a hellishly long 9:00 AM to 3:30PM class. That alone weeds out a lot of idiots.
