Jessie,

No, you are NOT too Slow. MDS Assessments are a very lengthy process (if the MDS is being completed per RAI Guidelines). With experience, the process flows smoother & a bit faster. Sloppy nursing notes, missing records, etc., only slow down the process. Most people outside of the MDS Dept. do not understand the Time Factor involved with MDS work. The position requres an extremely self-disciplined, detailed individual. :)

I would have to say that 3 is probably my average also. But, it all depends on the job duties you have in your position. I assist in discharge plans, make family calls, set-up appointments, daily morning meeting, weekly care plan meetings, talk with staff about concerns with my residents, etc. So, some days are busier than others, and I get less assessments done.

Yes there are missing records, sloppy nursing notes, care plan meetings, daily morning meeting and other distractions. Thank you both for your replies. I feel a lot better :)

I'm curious as each facility approach is different. Do you have to complete all sections of the MDS or does therapy, dietary, activities, and social services input their own data? Also, how many residents are you overseeing? In our facility the nurse manager for the unit coordinates his/her own residents. I am currently the RN Manager for a subacute/rehab unit. For me, this translates to up to 17 residents at one time depending on census. I rarely have to do quarterly MDS. However to compensate, I frequently complete discharge and admission MDS.

We enter information for all sections of the MDS, but are given the information for the interview sections, sect. E, sect. G, sect. K (except G-tube info), sect. M, restorative programs under sect. P. We do all the CAA's and care plans, except for social service/activities ones.

I can do about 4-5 quarterlies in a day. I can 2-3 comphrensive- more like 2 unless they trigger light. That is an 8 hours totally focused on them,

In my facility, we do all the sections, except: therapy enters their own portion of section O, dietary does section K, social services does E & Q. The unit managers enter section M. We are also in charge of seeing the residents to do the interviews.

I can get through the small assessments pretty quickly, but can only get about 3 big assessments done in a day.
