I was reading another thred about the rollercoaster that is nursing school and I was wondering if other programs lost the same or similar numbers of students. Also there is an added stress of seeing my friends and classmates leave. So how many students has your program lost and how do you deal with seeing your friends go?
In my program we started out with 114 we are down to 91 now.
I am a first semester student who started an RN program in Aug. We started with 40, and now have 39. We had one person leave after the first 2 days because of personal family issues unrelated to the program. My school has had a very high retention rate in the past which I hope continues as I and my new friends move through the program.
My program I don't know how many we lost total. We lost one over the summer and our class was split for the final capstone class. Half still had to take peds and the other half just finished up the program. I just finished and there were 17 of us and we almost lost one because of the final. She barely passed but did thank goodness. The other half that took peds the 1st 8 weeks has 12 but I heard that one person may not have passed.
pharmgirl, sounds like you go to my school! We started with 40 in January 2007, and we'll graduate this December with 11 of those original 40! We will graduate with 20... the extras were ones that failed the semesters ahead of us. Some of our original 40 moved out of town, but most just failed. Our program is pretty tough. But now that I'm almost done, I can objectively say that most of this has to do with extremely poor teachers. Actually, I cannot honestly call them such. They are just occupying positions. Seems like you can have 1 day of bedside experience, but if you have a Masters in Nursing, BAM, you're qualified to teach. Go figure.

I'm halfway through my 3rd semester of an ASN program. We started with 10, lost 1, and gained 1 from a group who started the semester before us.
