just curious, I've heard that 3 12 hour shifts per week is the norm.
call me lazy, but the idea of a 5 day weekend *every week* sounds amazing to me. am I crazy for wondering if two 12 hour night/weekend shifts could support a single adult without any expensive habits?
some folks on the livejournal nurses community told me about "Baylor weekends" and I all but broke into applause. that sounds so PERFECT.The Baylor gig at my hospital has you working every weekend with 1 weekend off per quarter. You work 2 12's (Fri/Sat or Sat/Sun depending on your shift) and get paid for 36 hours. If you have hobbies that are best enjoyed during the week, like skiing & whitewater kayaking, then this could be a good fit. Plus it allows you to easily pick up per-diem slots as needed.
I really want to get into permaculture...lots of organic gardening and possibly building my own "green" house and spending lots of time outdoors...maybe even be a part time college student (or going for my BSN and MSN, depending on how well nursing fits me). the Baylor thing is absolutely perfect. I don't care a whole lot about having weekends off, a bigger deal for me is maxing out the number of days off in a row - opening me up for travel and camping and stuff. oh, that would be glorious...
I am casual but usually work 2-3 12 hour nights... I find that I can be a wife, mom and RN and get all the things done that I need too... I love the 12 hours shifts... I did work 8 hours at one point and hated them. I hated going to work each day and dreaded it... I now look forward to working... I say go for it...
For the first five years of being a nurse, I worked my butt off! But after that,, and just recently, my pay has gone up exponentially. This allows me to work only 3 twelve hour shifts a week. Sometimes I feel like I should be working more, but then I tell myself how important it is to have a life outside of nursing.
You can get outrageous overtime, and make some money along with it,, but it all comes down to your life. If you want one, you can have one. A full time job only working three days a week,,, isn't it wonderful?? :)
You could look into a weekender program... I know you talked about having weekends off, but at my hospital, our weekenders work two 12's and get paid for 32 hours. I am not sure if they are considered full or part time, but it's a way to only work two days and still have 5 off for your hobbies...
I work fri-sunday (the very easiest days to work) think about it. Hardly any management, doctors and such. So, really, most of the time it is less work. ANd the weekend option differential is $8 more an hour than the regular shifts. So, it allows me to have all those weekdays off without losing money.
