How many classmates have you lost?

We are almost done with our first quarter, (A &P and Fundamentals/Skills); at least 12 of my classmates (out of 45 at the start) are about to drop out due to failing grades. How many did you lose after the first term?

These types of threads always scared me.....I am proud to say that we have not lost one classmate yet. We're a group of 40 and so far, we're all doing pretty well. :)

News from Norway:

My class started with 138 (which was over admission capacity) and now in the 3rd semester out of 6 we are down to 100. Unfortunately, I don't think failing is the problem here. The administration is a mess and the requirements are low. You can pass a test with an E here. Imagine that folks, they invented an extra letter in the grading system just so more people could pass.

We started with 47, dropped about 15 the first semester but then gained 15 back in 2nd semester (10 repeats from the class ahead of us and 5 transfer students). We have dropped about 5 more so far but I'd say there are fewer than 30 of us who started out together.

Yeah that is crazy..........is that in Norway or here in the states?

Our class (ABSN) started off with 45 and now we're down to 28 with 5 additional students coming to us from already failing one class. Fail 2 classes and your out without the opportunity to re-apply. I asked a Professor about the drop out rate and he replied that it's typical to lose about 1/3 of the class with Med/Surg being the largest weeder of students. So bone up on your Med/Surg...................

I'm in Med-Surg I and we started with 65 at the beginning of the semester...we've lost just over half now!!

I wonder if nursing school is really that difficult. I can't understand why people would go through so much trouble to get in the program and not go through the same, if not more trouble to stay in the program. I haven't even applied to nursing school yet and it just breaks my heart to hear that so many people who were accepted are dropping out while the ones who weren't accepted have to sit back and wait. I personally think it's silly.

It's not so much that they quit because they don't like it or that they changed their minds. It's the ones that didn't realize how much work would be involved or that realize that it's just too hard. Then there are the ones who have no choice. There is quite a high failure rate.

My class started with 32. When we graduated a year later, there were 20 but only 8 of them were from that original group. The rest were from earlier terms that failed & repeated.

Personally, maybe the schools could do a better job of letting the students know exactly what they had in store. I went to a private college, one that will take almost anyone as long as they have the money & can pass an IQ test with a high enough score. I think that's why we had such a high rate of drop outs.

Something that needs to be remembered here is that colleges and universities are first and foremost businesses........they need to generate profits. So yes they will lower their requirements and yes they will accept students that the year before weren't considered "qualifiable". It all depends on the bottom line and the amount of money that a peticular college can generate. Be it business, computer science, or even nursing. After that then it's the curriculum that will weed them out. So basically what is good for this year may change next year.................

We are 10 weeks into the LPN program and have gone from 30 students to 20 (and 2 other students are considering dropping).

We went thru our A&P in 4 wks ! The entire twenty something chapters!
