My first assignment started in October 1989. Full time travel until my six month assignment in Hawaii ended and I took a per-diem position on the island for another six months. Back to travel again until 1997 and spent some time in Florida. Back to travel in 2004 and don't plan on stopping until I can no longer find a travel job. Just turned 54, so I should have a few more years.
I've been traveling close to 10 yrs... love it and hate it both. I get real tired of packing and unpacking...moving crap and never feeling like I have a home...
Pay right now is not very good. If I wasn't out there already I wouldn't go until the economy get's better and that will probably be another 2 yrs..
Naples is a great place to spend the winter! I was in Ft.Myers for about a yr on contract.. my home was in Melbourne and FL is great for winter anywhere.
Yes, I travel with a small dog and she helps with the loneliness alot.. Skype is good but when you turn it off it's still 4 walls by yourself... the pooch helps me get out and walk ...thanks
Aortic's I like your name.... I am considering a perm for awhile as I am real tired of being on the road..
The climate of traveling and working with good recruiter's has changed alot with the economy. There are really "no" good companies right now. You should look for 3 to 5 companies to travel with. Better chance of always being employed.
I usually like the smaller companies as they tend to have better service, less overhead and are more attentive. The downside is they may not individually have as many positions as the larger one's.
Also, remember not one is your friend no matter how they like to promote that atmosphere. It is strictly a business for them... just let something happen and see how they respond, and be very leary of anyone recommending a company as most are looking for a referral check..
Something that not alot of traveler's are aware of... the recruiter's will submit as many people as possible to the same job. So, you maybe one of several for one position and they will not tell you this..

I'm curious how long have you guys or ladies been on the road traveling? What's the longest you stayed out on the road before returning "home"? How hard was it for you to return to life at home or how hard is it for you to think about coming off the road. Also, how old are you now and when you traveled?
I feel the gypsy in me coming out and by the end of this year ill be off on the road with my wife and son. I would have done it already but my oldest daughter is a senior and graduates this may. I want to get her situated in college then we are off.
