How long did take HR to contact you after your final interview? The people I interviewed with said they want to hire me, but HR has to be the one to call with the offer. It's been a week, but the department head went on vacation until this Friday.
Also, how does on-call work? Do you get paid for being on-call? I have an interview tomorrow and in the previous interview with this hospital they said something about being on-call at times. I just want to ask relevant questions about this.
I'm going to this interview tomorrow because I don't have any kind of confirmation about the other job and don't want to find out I don't have the job after all. I really hope I get the job I'm waiting on because it's my first pick, but this other hospital is a good place too.
Jax thank you. I did have a final interview today and I asked when to expect HR to call if I am offered the job. They told me that it will take about a week. So that was nice to hear.I also asked how their on call worked. They said that we pick one on call day every pay period. They pay $2 an hour for on call and if you get called in that it's time and a half. I have worked places ( not medical) that called you in and you weren't paid anything extra. So for me, this sounds great. So is this pretty common for on call?
2 dollars an hour is pretty low for on call, but I guess it depends on your location. Also ask how many hours you're on call for---is it just overnight? Is it 24 hours?
You realize if it's 24 hours and you get called in, you could potentially be there working for 20+ hours straight.

Gosh 24 hr on call sounds horrible. It's 12 hr shifts and it's the normal 12 hrs you would work. They ask that you pick one shift a pay period. I guess I was excited to be paid anything. I have worked a job that I was expected to drop everything if I wasn't on vacation and go into work. I wasn't paid any extra for it either. The good news was that it only happened once in the 2 years I worked for that company. So they tried not to abuse my off time.
The area that I live in is famous for low wages.
I have heard rumor that some of the hospitals don't pay anything for on call and you get your regular wage for coming in. I don't know if that's true. I do know that this hospital and it's sister hospital are one of 3 hospitals that are union. The hospital down the road just became union last year. I live in the south and union is not something that we see a lot of. I haven't heard of big wage differences with these hospitals compared to the others in town and the people that work there truly seem to like working at these hospitals.
I've talked with friends about if they had to take a family member to the hospital where would they go. They always say the hospital I will be working at. I have met people around town who work at this hospital and they always have great things to say. I do believe no work place is perfect, but I tried to really do my homework on this place.
I was encouraged to go apply at a different place that paid up to $5 hr more than the hospital I will be at, but I found out why. They had so many grievances filed against them that I don't even want to go there. Extra money isn't worth a healthy happy work place.
