So, I am working on a mother baby unit and I am considering moving on to public health. Just wanted to know how some of you like public health. What are some pros and cons, and do you miss the floor?

I've only been on the job for three days, but so far I love it. :)

Ha - just saw this from August. Now that I've been on the job another 5 months, I can safely say that I absolutely LOVE my job, LOVE public health, and LOVE working with low income, uninsured populations. So yeah.

I am seriously starting to look for a career in PH nursing. I'm thinking more toward at risk community for maternal child since that's where I have most of my experience and knowledge and love :)

I have a question. Where do you find the PHN jobs, seriously? I looked at the Harris County Health Department, as I am near Houston, and the only "1" job for nursing was for an LVN. I find it very hard to believe that there is only one job for nursing in all of Harris County. This is a huge area with Houston as a major city. Am I looking in the wrong place? I did find a WIC Nutritionist position that looked interesting but it was the only position that met my qualifications. I also looked at an adjacent county which had no nursing positions, only paramedic. I have been a Med/Surg RN for 1.5 yrs now. Where should I be looking?

Try looking under state employment as well. For some reason, at our county health depts, most work for the state rather than the county (budget reasons maybe). This is MD but it may be the same in TX.

Klone, do you work in a Nurse-Family Partnership position? I am considering a job as a PHN in this organization through my local DOH.

I refer patients to them regularly for my job, but no, I don't work for the organization. I have enormous amounts of respect for what they do, though. If it wasn't a step down in pay and responsibility, I would work for them in a heartbeat. I would love, someday, to work for them in management/administration.

Hi I know this post is kinda old, but I've been working as a PHN in the county maternal child adolescent health department doing home visits to pregnant women and babies under 1 yr old. I'm also the home visiting nurse for the county black infant health program. It is my first job as a new grad and OMG I love it so much! Just been working 2 months and I'm so happy. Hard to imagine going to work in a hospital. It is really being in the frontline of preventive health, and ensurors of long term health outcomes. It's also kinda part social worker part nurse haha. I did my senior preceptorship as a nursing student was on a mom-baby unit so I really played that up with examples during my interview. If u care about perks, it comes with awesome retirement plan, awesome but cheap health insurance, free vision, free dental. Pay is lower than a hospital but I make $4.50 More than my friend who works at SNF. Work is mon-fri 8-430, always off on on holidays. Anyways message me if you want more details! I'm very happy with
