How large is your school?

Hello I was just hired to start as a school nurse in a nearby public school for fall 2015.

I did school nursing from 2005-2009 in a private school with about 250 kids (pk-8th).

My new school is pk-5. I will have about 940 kids!

How many students do you have? How many do you see per day?

What is an efficient way to organize student files.

Thank you!

Hello everyone, I am employed in a high school with 1100 students. In my district each school has one RN and a secretary in the health office.

Please read my post requesting info from others regarding nurse to student ratios etc.

Thankfully we have SNAP and it is VERY helpful!! I noticed that a few others posted that they just getting used to SNAP. I recommend setting up an "Members Area" ID to access the "how to" area. There is a lot of user friendly information on the website and the technical support staff are extraordinary. I believe that many of them were originally school nurses. My school renews the tech support contract every year so that we always have assistance available. It is not very expensive. The members area info on the website is free. The web site can be accessed at:

What administrative duties do you do?

Most of the visits to my office are less than 3 minutes.

"I bumped my arm"

"here's some ice"

Stomach aches/headaches get a max of 10 minutes.

Bandages take a minute to apply.

Daily meds are less than a minute each.

Honestly, my office is empty a good portion of the time. If I could, I'd bring a book to read. There are days I have paperwork stuff to do, but a lot of my time is spent doing mundane tasks.

Same here.

It's just me at my school. I start the day running and don't stop until an hour after the kids are gone. I don't have time to eat or even go to the bathroom most days. There are always reports, meetings, and education that need to be completed. The days fly by but a little time to breath would be nice.

I have 620 PK-5 and see an average of 33 daily including meds. Next year, PK is being moved out and so I will have 600 K-5.
