How do I get a job as a Learning Disability Nurse in USA?

Published

Hi,

I am a Learning Disability Nurse working in the UK. I want to work in America and wondered if anyone has any ideas of where I could work. I currently work in a medium secure unit with people with learning disabilities that have been sectioned under the Mental Health Act 1983. I understand from what I have read of this forum that it is called Developmental disability nursing. Does anybody have any information, links to sites I could visit?

Kim

if youre interested in working with kids i know of so many schools and residential programs working with developmentally delayed kids in or around Boston, MA. let me know what youre looking for.

There are many agencies in New York City that work with this population both adults and children. You would have to be registered here. Go on the internet and review such agencies as United Cerebral Palsy Association (UCP), Services for the Underserved (SUS), AHRC, YAI, ARC, just to name a few.

Hi all, im currently in my 2nd year learning disability nursing degree and want to move to the US after. Is it recognized in the US coz i hear so many different stories.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Moved to the International forum

To meet US requirements you need to be general trained and need hours both clinical and theory in Paeds, Mental Health, Obstetrics as well as general adult

thanks for the info, how about Canada is that the same?

Yes, Canada also requires you to be general trained however a couple of provinces will accept mental health training (RMN) but not many (I think only 4)

Thanks, i might have to re-think all this again. looks like it down under for me then.

I think you will find 'down under' same.

It's actually Psychatric Registered Nursing that is recognized in the western provinces. Two years, specializing in mental health. The education would have to be evaluated by the College of Registered Pscyh. Nurses in the province you're hoping to migrate to.
