I've been working in med surg for a year now and was an LVN for 5 years before that. I really want to explore ER nursing and even took a 6 week course on it, but am having extreme difficulty breaking into that specialty. Most of the positions available require experience. I apply to all positions that I find in my area regardless of the experience requirements. I just don't know what I can do...any advice would be appreciated.
what about getting certified as an ER nurse? the BCEN says that experience is only recommended, not required. If I buy review books, is it possible to pass this exam without experience, and would it make me a more desirable candidate?

Have you tried applying to ICU's as well?
Keep applying to both, as you will need critical care experience for the ED.
Work on CE that relate to the ED and be willing to relocate

You have probably considered this but what about the ED in your hospital or one in your hospital system? Sometimes it is easier to make an internal transfer. My ED has taken several nurses who worked on the floor or in the ICU and they have done quite well.

You can pass it by studying which proves you can pass a test.
However, the cert itself implies that you are a subject matter expert in emergency nursing. If you have the cert but no actual ER experience, would that be true?

Have you tried to see if you can do some floating in the ed. Also sometimes it helps to be in a telemetry unit or the mote stable section of the ed. Get your acls if possible.
