How do 12hr shifts work in the prison?

Published

Here is a question. We are trying to get 12 hr shifts worked out for our prison and the don is open to this idea. I am trying to work out the kinks. The 24 hr spots include CTCs = 2:nurse::nurse: rns (for 2w & 3w)& 1 lvn med nurse, TTA= 1 RN w/a rover rn, & OHU= 2 :nurse::nurse:RNs (for 2w& 3w). How does it work out with vacations, coverage when there is a sick call in the 12hr spot .....:nurse:.... does someone who works in the prison have an idea how this works............. I have many questions and need answers fast

thanks

Here's how we used to do it before our staffing was cut.

One week on & the next week off...The week on, we used to work 3 days off 1, & work 3...off 7.....The week on was 12.5 h. shifts...(There were 2 nurses on days, 2 nurses on nights per each rotation. (S0 counting the DON, there were 9 Nurses working). Since then our staffing has been cut.Now there are 2 Nurses on Days..One comes in at 5:00AM the other @ 6:30...The night Nurse(Me) comes in at 15:00... The opposite rotation works the same, sched. we do. Of course there is the occasional OT, So we all cover each other during Vacations, etc. HTH

What is CTC or TTA?

We too are looking to rid the prison of 8 hour shifts and get 12 hour shifts, BUT the DON wants to keep the Baylor nurses on the weekends, so basically, he doesn't want to mess with their schedule, but is open to 12 hour shifts. I HATE 8 hour shifts and want to help with the change to 12 hour shifts if I can. Any ideas would be appreciated.

It is working great for us, for the RN's. But not for the LVN's because it won't work due to medication pass times. So the LVN's are on 9 hour shifts. They gave them a 9/80 schedule because it was the least they could do since they couldn't get 12's.

We have always worked 12 hr shifts and fight like hell to keep 8 hr shifts out. We just don't have the staffing for it.

Here is how it works: 2 days on, 2 days off, 3 days on, 2 days off. So you are only working every other weekend. Your total hours are 88 for the pay period, but it's easier. (We tried working a split shift on Tuesday where everyone came in for only 6 hours, but that didn't last long ... LOL)

For example: Work: Monday & Tuesday

Off: Wednesday & Thursday

Work: Friday, Saturday & Sunday

The following week it would be the exact opposite. It's called 12/hr shift. We work the exact same schedule as the officers do with the exeption of flipping days and nights.
