How to hire a NP

Hi all,

Thought this was a great community and I wanted to hear the experiences from real nurses. I work for a doctor's office, and we are looking to hire a NP to work independently and basically take over the practice for the doctor eventually (he would like to work less as he grows older). The problem is that I know NP's are in high demand, so I'm not even really sure how to find one to hire. What would you guys do if you were in my position?

Depends, a novice NP or an experienced NP?

If novice,

Contact your good local NP programs and let them know you are interested in hiring a NP for the practice. If your doc is flexible and wants to hire the "right one" he could potentially have the chance to take a student for 18 months and train them for free then hire them afterwards.

If experienced,

Ask around to other local offices/specialists and you can network your way into an experienced NP that other local providers have vouched for.

Sounds like you want someone experienced. I would look to your state's APN organization, network with them, network with other practice managers with similar practices.

Thanks for all the help! I'll try calling other doctor's offices as I haven't tried that yet. I also just looked up some APN organizations.
