hi fellow RNs, i just passed my nclex exam and need lots of help from experienced and new grad nurses, dont know where to start. I dont know what new grad program should i take, medsurg, ICU or labor and deliver etc. so many to overwhelming.

One experienced nurse told me that I should take the telemetry or the new grad icu program. what would be the basis of choosing one? I do consider the advise because while studying for the nclex exam my favorite is the cardiovascular system. is that good enough basis?

Pls pls help me, also, for those new grad whose now in ICU program how hard is the training??? what book should you advise for us starters to read to expand our knowledge.

thanks so much!

What interests you? If you go into a program just for the training/experience and it isn't an area that really interests you, you will burn out fast!

I don't consider myself to be experienced quite yet, but I am not new either :) I went straight into an ICU position and I really like it, but that is what interests me! I know some people that went straight into medsurg, peds, or OB and they love their jobs.

Finding the "perfect" job is like finding a career path, everyone has their opinions about what you should do, but in the end only you can decide what you want to do. ICU training is very hard and requires lots of classes, etc. but it is totally worth it if that is what you want to do! Congrats on passing the NCLEX and best of luck with finding a job!!

If you are undecided, look at the actual floors and units you will be working in. Ask the nurse managers if they will let you "shadow" a nurse in each of the units. 3 or 4 shifts of your life is a small price to pay to check out where you want to spend much of your time.

While you are shadowing, notice how the nurses interact. Do they seem satisfied? Is there a core of experienced nurses(mentors) or is the floor a patchwork of floaters, agency nurses and new grads? Do you detect a morale problem?

Pay attention and listen to your instincts.

I started in a new grad ICU program and it was very intensive..I would stick to the rule..work where you enjoyed clinicals during school.

Thanks so much for the reply! very helpful indeed! I need to look around first and really know what interests me. we had clinical practice in ICU but only for a short time, i'd like to find out more of the activities there! Thanks all for the reply! May God keep us all safe!
