Well that all depends on how you look at it. Compared to some other schools I've heard of, it's really not that hard. Once you are in your last semester of pre-req's (which they've actually deleted some courses so it's now easier to complete them) you can apply to the nursing program. As of now it's a one to two semester wait. It will probably get worse though. It used to be a one semester wait, now it's about two semesters, and that's after having a drop in applicants (probably due to people waiting for some of the pre-req's to go away which is for Fall '06). This spring there's probably going to be a big jump in applicants b/c the CNA pre-req's are getting dropped.

So...if you have all of your pre-req's done and can apply this fall for spring '06, then you'll probably have a one to two semester wait, but if you haven't even started your pre-req's, there's no telling how bad it will be by the time you're done.

Also, the CC's don't operate on a point system for entrance into NS, it's all done by lottery, so if you finish all of your pre-req's and apply, it won't matter if you have a 4.0, it's all luck of the draw.

do you know what the pre-reqs for the LPN program are? I was looking at college website and it just had a bunch of pre-reqs for the RN program. Are the LPN pre-reqs the same as RN pre-reqs?

Yes they are. You might want to look into the Maricopa Skill Center or Estrella Skill Center for doing the LPN part; they can give you a definite start date and you can be working on your prereqs. You don't need all the prereqs at the Skill centers. This is a faster route and you can transfer to one of the CC for block 3 and 4. I did it this way and shaved off a semester of waiting time.

Yep, blocks 3 and 4 are for RN. There weren't any prereqs when I went last year except a HS diploma, and the ability to pass some english, math, and reading pretests that are about 10th grade level. I think that CNA and the HCC classes are rereqs now; I am not sure.

Phoenix Girl goes to Estrella, maybe she can tell you. The cost is quite a bit more than the community college price is - but at least you will know when you will go to nursing school. When you attend the info session they tell you how long the wait is and when the next openings are. When I went the wait was one year - but I spent that time doing prereqs anyway.

what is HCC? Is the CNA program like an 8 wk course or something?

Wow 1 year wait! I'm contemplating if I wanna go to the program here in Hawaii or move to Phoenix and buy my dream home and go to the program there? I think i'd have to wait a year anyways to become a resident in Phoenix...so it kinda works out. We only have 1 community college that has the LPN and RN program. They only have 1 opening a year and they only take about 30 students for the LPN program. And the RN program...they have 2 openings a year and only take 30 or so each time. So, it's pretty hard to get into the programs here.
