How to get away from bedside nursing

Nurses Career Support

Published

I am so completely burned out by bedside nursing. I've been doing it for 5 years now and I am ready to move on to something else. Problem is, every time I apply for a non bedside nursing job, I get turned down because all I have is bedside experience.

It usually goes something like this, I apply for the job then get a call from a recruiter saying "Hey, we're looking for someone with more experience with that job but you'd be perfect for such and such bedside nursing position". NOOOO!!!!!

get a master degree and move on. You can apply for be an insurance reviewer, research coordinator if you are into that kind of thing. Lots of options. Don't limit yourself.

I worked on a med-surg telemetry job right out of school. Got burnt out really quick. Went into infusion now. Guess you can say it's chair side! [emoji1] definitely less stress.

I think you would still be in a better position than others with your 5 yrs exp in bedside. I recently graduated and aspire to have my own desk job one day but can't even find a job anywhere. I'm thinking of pursuing a different career maybe...

Many places post the non bedside job looking to get applicant worker bees. The old bait and switch. Have seen it many times in 17 years. Yet these places don't understand why no one wants to take them up on it. Even if the non bedside job existed, generally it will go to an internal candidate and/or has already been decided before the posting

Ugh, this same thing happened when I was contacted by a recruiter for a well-known hospital chain on LinkedIn. I inquired about HIM/Informatics positions but the recruiter said there were hardly any but pointed towards positions similar to what I have now.

I found my current job on (don't laugh) Craigslist. I am a student nurse, and sometimes people use multiple avenues of outreach to find appropriate candidates, along with your standard job websites like Indeed or Monster. I was a bedside nurse for a few years and wanted to do something different.

It's probably time to begin accumulating some experience in "extra" activities..... you know, the ones that no one wants to volunteer for because it doesn't get you any extra money. So - get involved in committee and task force activities; volunteer to do some chart audits; help out with inservices . . . or any other types of extra-curricular things going on. This will not only give you some additional stuff on your resume, but it will also make you more visible to higher-ups so that you are considered when new opportunities arise.

Case Management will require a BSN because this is the minimum qualification for CM certification - and that's the credential that matters.
