How far do you drive to work?

Published

Hey there! I've been applying to a ton of applications all within a 25 minute drive of my house and it's just so competitive in the area and I'm not getting anywhere. I've been applying for over two months now. Last month I broadened my search to about an hour away from my house and went to their new grad open house. I felt really at home and got such a better vibe from this hospital than the ones that are local for me. I just got a call from the nurse manager from one of the units I spoke with at the open house, and she seemed really enthusiastic about bringing me in for an interview. I know driving an hour to work is not uncommon, but I'm just wondering if any of you nurses also drive a long distance for work. Wondering about your experience after a long day shift or after night shift how the drive is. Thanks in advance!

10 minutes. :) It was a big factor in why I took this job.

My job is 43 miles from my home, and a little under an hour drive. I work with some people who commute well over an hour, and some even have homes in other states and rent apartments in the city where we work.

I don't mind the drive. When it gets to be too much, I will probably look for something closer to home.

I have two jobs. They are 12 and 14 miles from my home. The 14 mile job is mostly highway driving and takes me around 20 minute to get there. I work nights and go in the opposite direction of the traffic on my way home. If there is bad weather (snow, rain, sleet, ice etc) it can take much, much longer. I am fine driving home from my night shift, wide awake and ready to roll...but the drive in...wow..something about the darkness, empty road and the monotonous drive that lulls me into sleepiness. I always have to have the window wide open, heat off and really loud music on to keep in focused. I can't imagine having an hour + commute going in on a night shift..I can pretty much bet I'd be in a ditch or guardrail somewhere. :(

The 12 mile job, well while it closer it takes much longer because its all back roads and side street.
