How far would you commute for a hosp job?

How far would you commute each way (not relocating) for a hospital job as a new grad? I am curious what others think...

In order to get experience I wouldn't mind commuting up to 60 miles for 1 to 2 years.

I drive 55 miles, it's not too bad if you enjoy your job. I listen to books on CD. Last year I left my wonderful job to take one closer to home. I was miserable. Better 55 happy minutes...than 20 miserable ones.

Seriously, the way it is looking I would probably be willing to commute an insane number of hours a day if that meant I was actually going to get a new grad job. Probably up to 2 hours each way.

I would happily commute 60 miles each way.

What about 75 miles? I saw this today on Valley Health's website (Winchester, VA): Nursing Fellowship -- it's in either the CCU or CVSICU. The main site is here: Valley Health

Wow Lunah you are a step ahead of me! I just applied there a few days ago, after having read about those jobs on this website. It is actually 60 miles for me because I live toward that direction anyway. Since I spent 20 years commuting into DC every day (which took an hour and really sucked), I can't imagine 60 miles on the highway thru pretty country is going to be any worse.

Valley Health is also hiring in Front Royal. We'll see what happens. Beggars cannot be choosers and this is a tough market.

But thanks!

I'm not in the market for a job yet, but I don't want to work more than 10 miles from where I live; which equals to about 30-45 min commute time (traffic here is abysmal). Getting stuck in traffic is way too stressful and bad for your heart

Awesome! The pay may be less, but the hospital is nice, state-of-the-art, and has a great reputation. I have some friends that work there, and they love it. Most of the time. :) And Warren Memorial (Front Royal) isn't bad -- I've only seen the ED, though, when I take patients there as a paramedic.

I used to commute from Winchester to Alexandria, back in my old career. That is part of the reason I changed careers -- 89 miles each way, four or five days a week, nearly made me insane!! I drive from Winchester into Loudoun County now, and it's not bad at all.

Thanks for the nice words about the Winchester hospital. Hopefully they will give me a call. I actually have neither lived or worked in a rural community before and I think I would enjoy giving it a try. I have heard good things from people who work there. The job market is tough in DC, especially now that all the new grads are in the market. My alternative is to relocate in the fall if I have to, but I really don't want to do that.

Are you an ER nurse in Loudon?

I'll send you an email, since you don't have enough posts for the private message (PM) system quite yet -- you need 15. :)
