How far would you commute for awesome salary?

I have an interview for a regional float position with Kaiser this week.

Free insurance for the family and about $12 more an hour would have me banking a lot more money a month. I would save $800 a month in insurance alone, not including the bump in salary.

The catch, I could potentially have an 1.5 hour commute, one way. Now, I'm not sure how often I could expect to float to that facility, but man that's a haul each way. Most of the facilities are about 40 minutes, no biggie. But 1.5 each way?

Does anyone do that now or would consider it for a nice pay raise?

Hostel? rooming house? some YMCA's still have rooms. I would make it happen to get in with Kaiser. You might find someone with a home willing to rent you a room for very little if they know you will only need it once in a while. Maybe work out the amount of advance notice you would have to give. I would post an ad on CL and bend the box until I figured it out.

I honestly won't take the job. I hate driving.... And i also hate driving that long after a very stressful shift. It's not all about the money all the time. Good luck and hope the driving doesn't burn you out :-/

I drive 30 minutes each way and that's far enough for me. The most I could do for a nice increase is 45minutes.

Before I moved I had an hour commute and I hated it.

I'd do it! I wouldnt do it if it was every day, which it doesnt sound like it will be. I commuted an hour one way for my last job 3 times per week. 1.5 hours is much longer but you wont be doing it as often. Downside is if you would be regularly missing some sort of family time while youre in the car. Then that would get old fast.

Do something somewhat productive with your time in the car-podcasts? Audiobooks? Self reflection time? Everyone could use an extra 3 hours of "me" time, yours will just be in the car while commuting to and from work!

Here is what I was told....

They can't promise I would never have to go long distances, such as the 1.5 I mentioned, but they try to float others closer first. In short, I'd probably go there on occasion, not regularly.

What the position is, would be me floating to primary offices. Most cases, it's offices with current shortages and I could sometimes be at a particular location weeks at a time. Monday-Friday 8-5. A rare weekend here and there. Compensation for mileage.

I've really been needing to get out of bedside nursing as I'm burnt out big time. Also, I really want weekends off with the family so I don't miss my 12 year old sons football and basketball games on the weekends. I hate the idea of giving up my 3 day work week, but it would be nice to know I won't miss any of my boys games. That is very important and means a lot to both of us.

Lastly, it would get my foot in the door with Kaiser. Something I've been wanting to do for years.

They have one more interview and I should know next week.
