How difficult is it to immigrate to America for nursing?

Published

My partner and I are nearly finished our nursing degrees, him doing Adult and me doing mental health nursing in the UK. We want to move out to America for nursing but aren't sure if we should go with an agency or not. He loves the idea of O'grady Peyton but I have read so many bad reviews on it. There's also the issue of me doing mental health nursing which doesn't exist in America, how would I transition to pyschiatric nursing and what is the timescale for the transition?

Any help would be brilliant :D

American nursing education is "generalist". We do not specialize until after we graduate and that specialization initially consists of getting a job in a particular area. We can go on to be certified in a specialty if we desire. You need to first make sure your education meets the standards of the board of nursing in the state you want to live. By standards I mean that you need to have theory and clinical in all areas of nursing (including peds and OB) not that your education is below ours.

Specializes in NICU, ICU, PICU, Academia.

OP: If you use the search feature (upper right hand corner of this page) you will find that nursing education in the UK does not qualify you to take the NCLEX exam, required to become an RN in the states. Please read through some of the existing threads to see what your options are.

Best wishes! (I am about to gain an Englishman as a son-in-law)

Check out Dominican university of California for international educated nurses EIN to top up your RN education from UK so you can qualify and take NClEX
