How Did Your Job Prepare for Magnet Status?

My hospital is applying for Magnet Status. The surveyors are visiting us from September 5-7th of this year. They are basically driving us insane with this, since they are coming in less than one month.

I wish to hear from those that went through this process. What did your facility do to prepare for it? When the surveyors came, what sort of questions did they ask you? Was it a comfortable experience or harrowing? Please share! Thanks, folks!

That is what happens after years of the kind of management that usually happens on nsg units. Where favorites get what they want and the needs of many are ignored. Where inconsistant punishments are handed out at the managers whim. And where management creates situations that create rivalries so that staff is never united (b/c it might be dangerous to have your entire staff united against you). In this kind of environment some will always choose to prosper by any means and that usually means making others look bad.:trout:

A perpetual problem. It is either the favorites or the bullies that are actually the shining stars that receive all that they want. A learning lesson for me is to not wish to be in a position all the time to need from them. This is how they get you. You come begging and then, they use you as a pawn to do their dirty work. Most of the union representatives for the RNs are their puppets these days. They are the main cheerleaders for magnet and performing in these 'side shows'. Horrible..simply horrible!! I can't wait for it to be over. I do plan to read the material to ensure that they cannot blame me for blowing magnet for them, but besides that, forget it.

"forces of magnetism" !!!??? Good grief...sounds like something out of one of the Star Wars movies. Are these people for real? What really turned me off was the offering of treats to get nurses to "perform" ie answer questions in the right way..I think it is disgusting and I think the whole Magnet thing is bullcrap.

I have no problem with furthering my education and giving the best care I am capable of, this Magnet stuff is a marketing thing-nothing more.

Oh, yeah...forces....how quaint a word. The whole process has become really agonizing and ridiculous. And, unfortunately, these people think this is for real. I'm still trying to get over what my friend told me about obtaining grief counseling because her hospital lost magnet. Good grief....the counseling was probably for the managers that lost their jobs.

:banghead:does anyone have anything POSITIVE to say about MAGNET STATUS?

It wont affect you personally much as a nurse. Its not like when JACHO comes rolling in and is looking for mistakes in your work.

Its quite the opposite in fact. The questions they will be asking you as a nurse will have to do with your satisfaction with the facility. The happier you are, the better they score. Whether you want to mention any complaints you have about the facility or not is the question you have to ask yourself.

I was clerical when my hospital got magnet status and everyone was so happy and some even cried when we got it.

Now as a nurse on the floor all the nurses, including me, say the same thing: "Thanks Magnet, now we have even more work to do!"

My thing is how are we suppose to do all these things, ie make a magnet poster, come up with catchy magnet sayings, WHEN WE SHOULD BE TAKING CARE OF PATIENTS!?!

Plus these monthly magnet meetings with staff. Come on. Those take like 2 freakin hours.
