Just curious about the different ways LPN/LVN's get their certifications in EKG & 12 lead interpratations. I know different states and BON have different rules. What is your story? Thanks Everyone.

I am not certified, but I took a continuing education course for both, EKG as well as 12 lead interpetations here in New York. Those courses were taught wonderfully by Beth Israel School of Nursing. Maybe there is one near you that you can take advantage of. Some community colleges offer the courses as well. I didn't deal with the BON, I just discovered the courses, paid, and sat for them. It was interesting; I was the only LPN sitting there but was able to keep up with them very well. Most will tell you the characteristics of the stips, as well as medications used. It was wonderful!

There is no certification here. We learn and we do.

I just came back from that same school of nursing for a Diabetes Lecture. It was really great...just what I needed to incorporate into my patient teaching. It was a wonderful experience. And, in November, will be returning for an HIV seminar, and will be doing an on line course for chest pains and intervention. Good luck. EKGs are fun!

Once you find the place or company that gets you fired up, I find a new breath of air somehow. I agree EKG's are fun. I spotted a Type II Block in a patient by the Grace of God. The doc was happy! Yes, we can do it!!!!!!

Have a great day today!

I caught an MI once; even before the doctor. She was so happy, she said "good catch...". I have to get more practice at them, though, because some of the EKGs are not that obvious. I work in a clinic, so, I don't get to see many. I wish they would assign me to the cardiac clinic; they do them all the time, and I would have the attending at my disposal because he LOVES to teach. What I did a few days ago, though, was to print out EKGs from the machine, white out the names of the patients and took the strips home. I plan to read them and see what I come up with.

Hey Pagandeva2000,

Have you ever considered working in a stress test lab as a tech? That is where I saw many different rhythms and such. I too worked in a clinic and I hear ya. You're going back to school aren't you? I'm new to the site as an active participant and wasn't sure. You sound very dedicated and have a willingness to learn. A good team player.:balloons:

I would like to gain more experience with reading EKGs before I branch into something else. Actually, I may gain this opportunity in a few weeks because I will be working per diem in med-surg at my hospital and will be starting orientation for two days next week. On the telemetry unit, they usually have LPNs monitor their monitors. If they send me to telly, I'll ask my friend that monitors to show me a thing or two. Actually, I really do not wish to become an RN. While I like their money, I HATE that level of responsibility. I am cool where I am at this time. I am dedicated and have a willingness to learn, that is true. But, I also know myself.

I use this book called "EKGs; Plain and Simple". Has been great! Have a great evening!

Tele is good. We had to sit with monitors monitoring as part of our class. I am taking the last of my prereq's and then will apply for RN. Always was the plan, time ,kid, and money . I am currently an LPN now too.

Good Morning!:smilecoffeeIlovecof
