How do you deal with lazy nurses??

One of my pet peeves is lazy nurses! They are nearly useless! They sit and gossip half the night and complain about their patients are pressing the call light. Some making so much money per hour it's sickening. All ages.... mostly younger ones... alot of agency nurses! Just my opinion. No, just the nurse I had to work with the other night!

Sorry.... I know of many young nurses that are hard workers... that don't act like the world owes them something, or they are spoiled brats. And YES, I know alot of hard working agency nurses that get crapped on.

But goodness, this young thing the other night we had was something else!

I just have no patience (or use) for a lazy nurse... for as much as they pay us we should put in the work to earn it.

I've been wondering about that for many years. You definitely need an institution that gives a "you know what!":angryfire . Very few organizations care any more about the quality of work being done, just the quanity. There was very little accountability in the hospital I just left. But, I keep trying:mad: .

Wow, I have only been on the floors as a student nurse for a few weeks, but from what I've noticed all of the nurses work extremely hard. They are constantly running around and often don't get lunch until 1 pm or 2 pm if they are lucky. I try to help them, the interns and the nursing assistants as much as I can when I have an extra minute. When I get home each day I just want to plop on the couch because I'm so tired! Nursing is definately not a job for lazy people!

Lazy nurses don't deserve a place in any health care institutions. They need to give up their licenses and seek something else.

hey, louisiananurse...i know there will probably be a reply like "oh, i didn't mean it that way"...but your post is degrading to the younger generation of nurses. in your post, let's take out your "young nurses" and "this young thing" and try replacing it with, oh, i don't know, "this old thing the other night" or "nurses over 40".....it's age discrimination...it goes either way...heck, you could put "this gay thing the other night" or, i don't mean to say all black nurses are this way but "this black thing the other night. think about it.:angryfire

i tried to resist responding to your post... but my gut just wouldn't let me ignore it! louisiananurse is not discriminating in her vent... she is merely painting a picture so that we can see the situation through her eyes. she actually tried to make it very clear that she is not prejudice against younger nurses and agency nurses. i will assume that as i am you are in that younger generation of nurses. we have all got to stop being so overly sensitive about these things.

Lazy people are everywhere, not nursing only. They go everywhere, do everything except their duties and presume in their minds that no one knows.Nevermind someone of significance knows! And there is something called retribution, and time. To all the hard working nurses- continue to do your job the best you know how. Rewards are not always tangible!

I am new to dialysis and I see nurses buzy with personal phone calls when patients or techs need them. I need the experience and instruction from one of these nurses so I do not want to say anything to get on thier sh*t list.

I guess I see things differently than they do. They have many years of experience. I am talking of a nurse with 10 years experience.

I have seen one charge nurse who was thought of as being bossy who would chew out anyone at the end of the day who was not pulling their weight. I miss that bossy nurse now.

What I LOVE is being pulled to another unit because mine isn't busy enough and they are "running crazy", only to get there and have them run my tail off so they can sit and read ... or talk ... or play video games ... UGH!

Very few nurses I have known ever get a chance to take it easy. They may be burnt out or wiped out from a run of hard shifts. Most of my life as an agency nurse I got dumped on but it was because the staff nurses were overworked themselves. Plenty of times when I came on at 11PM I saw nurses in tears trying to give report because they had been overworked and seriously abused.

I don't deny that you are probably on the money. The thing is, my unit is just as understaffed and I have left plenty of times on the verge of tears. I just think that when, on the VERY rare occasion that I have a little down time, I should be able to enjoy it. They do. One night there was only myself and one other L&D nurse with babies shooting out everywhere! (I guess I should count myself lucky because most of the time I am alone.) The unit that I am fussing about had two RNs a CNA and FIVE patients - and this isn't ICU, it is med - surg. I asked our supervisor why someone couldn't come help us, as we were always helping them. She replied that, "well, they only have five patients, but they are all total care and they are trying to get some baths, etc. done for dayshift."

I can't tell you the times that our unit never got restocked, charts never got made, and the kicker - I was even told once to leave the c-section room down to go help them! I refused that one and nearly got written up, but oh well.

I do know what you are saying though. I absolutely love what I do, the people I work with - almost everything about my job. I just wish the world could catch a glimpse into our (a nurses) world sometimes ...
