How do you deal with the conflict in nursing school?

Published

I graduate in 3 1/2 months and for the past year +. Its this one student that is like a bully. She walks around all day in class and clinical, saying and these are her exact words. " I don't like anybody in this (f'ing word) class? I only like so and so and just rude this girl had to have said this over 500 times since I've been in this program plus she's rude and evil. I asked her why do she say that she said " I don't give a f, because I don't" mind you it was two teachers that went to the DON about her and she did nothing. A few classmates and nothing gets done. I swear its taking all of me not to literally go off. She does this all day every day and the teachers doesn't do anything about it. Its so hard to have a positive atmosphere in the class because of her. Its like high school all over again. I'm so stressed out as is and just to put up with it is really annoying me. How should I handle this? Have you ever dealt with something similar before? Thanks in advance!

Yea, what kind of clown college accepts people like that? I had to interview for all the programs I applied for. Also don't bring up the recording, illegal in most states without other persons consent.

Yes it's a for profit college.

Yes it's a for profit college.

Yeah you're right. I looked up the law in my state and it says only if you're a part of the conversation or a public place. So idk. They were talking about us for a hour. Just cursing and she turned the whole thing around telling other students we wrote about them and DON said she's not going anywhere and how she's reporting everything here on out..so much drama. So now all four of them are writing letters and all four of them once upon a Time she bullied and were rude with.

Don't even bother with her.Anytime she goes off, just laugh, because no way anyone would willingly hire someone with that kind of attitude. Our school had us take a personality test before we were accepted; I guess to weed out people like her.

I wish they did the same because it was like take a test and get in the program. But I don't see how they keep her around if even the instructors see how she is.

Whoa!

You need to request a face-to-fact meeting with the DON. This situation is not just unacceptable, it is also unprofessional. It is not fostering a productive learning environment.

You need to make sure that this student isn't just blowing smoke out of her butt. Confirm with the DON that student will remain in good standing. DON may refuse to discuss an individual student situation with you, due to privacy.

Be sure that you document dates and actions of the student. Present this to the DON. Get ready to go above their head to the Dean of Student Affairs. And if need be, get ready to go higher - Board of Regents.

Don't accept this!!!!! Your school needs to step and do what is right by the majority of students.

Again, you are paying for an education. They aren't doing YOU a favor. You have the power. You pay their salaries. Your ability to pass NCLEX is how they maintain their accreditation.

I will because like you mentioned we don't deserve this and she's laughing like they've said nothing to her and she's running up there everyday reporting and writing letters.

As the thread continued, and I thought more about your responses, I started to feel as though you must attend a for-profit institution.

This is really too bad because I highly doubt that they will remove this student. They have no incentive to do so. Your school is only motivated by one thing: profit.

If you weren't so far into the program, I would advise you to LEAVE as soon as possible. But since you are nearly finished, and have probably paid WAY too much money for this school, you are stuck. And I do mean STUCK.

You can look into the accreditation process for you school and take your complaints to the governing board (they still must be overseen by the Board of Regents in your particular state), but that is pretty much your only option. Your school will do NOTHING about this student. They don't care about the learning environment, they only care about student loan dollars they receive and other payments.

I am very sorry for your situation. I NEVER would have advised you to attend a for-profit institution.

Since your school isn't about to do anything about the situation, do what you must to survive. They won't discipline you either!

Good luck.

I hope this was a teachable moment for her and that she will be able to see how she can improve her behaviour in the future. Congratulation on taking a stand and advocating for your self. If we cannot advocate for ourselves , how on earth can we advocate for our patients.

@mzsuccess: Your story sounds too familiar...its called being a bully. I am not going to lie, it hurt, especially when you know what they saying is not true. Its your word against theirs.

This is what I did...I prayed to GOD to "give me strength and caste all the negative people away from me" right before coming to class--faithfully. I received that strength from GOD to the point I became immune to the silly characters I endured...no lie. It was not only me dealing with the shenanigans, there were about a hand full of us--mind you we made complaints to the director, but it only got worse.

That's when we started putting two-two together and found out this girl was buddy-buddy with the director. From then on we agreed to ignore and stay focus because we had 2 months left...it was a challenging 2 months, but it made me mentally stronger, because I knew she and her friends will have their day in court. We had so many assignments and projects to do in a short period of time, that it left little to zero room to pay attention to them.

On the final week the girl approached me when when no-one was around, looking sad, saying "can I talk to you?"

You know what I said, I said "nope." And gathered my notebook and textbook and exited the library. It felt good. I patted myself on the back and said job well done. From then on I made a promise to myself not to ever give anyone the power to make me come out of character--its not worth it.

Trust me, I know there are days you just want to go off on the person, but you have to think about it and ask yourself...why?

You would be sacrificing yourself and not only speaking for yourself, but for others in your class who failed to speak up. And guess what? You might have to pay the ultimate price for it, while everyone is still tight lipped and hanging in there. You never know who knows who. Trust me it will pay off at the end:)

@mzsuccess: I bet you feel like you in a twilight zone, right? I know the feeling too well...they had me put both hands on my head like--you got to be kidding me.

For a minute I thought I was being punked by Ashton Kutcher...smh

I thought it would be as well, my intention was not to get her kicked out. But at this point, I no longer care because she's still doing the same thing. She didn't learn her lesson.

Wow. Thank you for your testimony. I'm going to trust God and brush it off. I feel like this is just the devil trying to throw me off track. She'll mess her own self up. If you've been through it so can I. You have no idea how this touched me.
