  1. I think that you should contact the person who is in charge of the research ( the principle investigator). The researchers probably have an information sheet that you could provide to the potential participants. Then it is up to the potential participants to contact the researchers if they wish to participate.
  2. Thank you for your insightful article on the opioid crisis. I think that your detractors have misconstrued feministic ethics of care to mean feminine ethics of care. These are two separate constructs. The other model which fits within a paradigm to assist people with substance use issues is a trauma informed care perspective. Perhaps others might find this model more acceptable. But nevertheless you have been very brave and you should publish in a peer reviewed journal in the future. Debi
  3. I too am a "fixer" . The thing is as an experienced nurse , I do have a pretty ideas/ solutions / suggestions. I have even caught myself saying out loud on the way home from work. " I can't fix everything". Its my new mantra.
  4. I have been a victim of sexual abuse in the workplace. This pattern has to stop. I have two sons and one daughter and I hope that I have raised them well. But the sad fact is that I have had to raise my daughter to be very cautious about being around men. Men don't have the same experiences of unwanted sexual advances as women do and when it does happen it is a very rare experience. I think that we can all thank the current president of the USA for the current awareness of sexual impropriety. Enough is finally enough it would seem.
  5. I guess that it depends on the type of feedback that you receive. I have received negative feedback from time to time and need to objectively review the comments to see if there is anything that I need to change in the delivery of the content. One issue that I have though is the way in which feedback is collected. For example one form that we use allows the students to comment on how we deliver the session. I am not an actor. Sometimes the content just needs to be delivered and it is critical that people need to know exactly what they need to know. Making personal statements about how I deliver "boring" content is not helpful. What I have tried to do is to tell them in advance that this is the course content and that they as health care providers need to know this in order to keep their jobs.
  6. I hope this was a teachable moment for her and that she will be able to see how she can improve her behaviour in the future. Congratulation on taking a stand and advocating for your self. If we cannot advocate for ourselves , how on earth can we advocate for our patients.
  7. "If you haven't got a BSN, you can't use "BSN" in your username. Change your attitude and take the job. It may not be your dream job, but it will pay the rent and the health insurance". I guess I'm not a real nurse either. I am a nurse educator , a "real nurse educator"
  8. Hello, Entry to practice in Ontario is a bachelor of science degree, so the answer is no. Furthermore you haven't said if you wrote the NCLEX exam which is currently the exam for registration that all provinces except Quebec are using. So again the answer is still no. The CNO is the source of truth and asking these question on this forum is probably not the best idea. BTW, I have been a registered nurse in both Ontario and in Quebec.
  9. In some universities you can ask for a copy of the previous year's exam. Thats not cheating. Some of them you can access on line. Furthermore if a student has a family member who is a teacher then they too would have access to knowledge that others don't. I personally don't think that access to "test banks" is a big deal unless it is specifically forbidden in the school's policy. If the instructor uses the test banks verbatim from the text book that is a problem that they are creating and this practice should be covered in their school's policy.
  10. I was in a similar position as I had my probationary period extended on an adult medical unit. I actually knew that I was a lot slower than other nurses. I stuck it out for a year, found another job and quit. In the meantime another new nurse started and there was someone new for the NUM to focus on. Keep your chin up , nursing is a hard job and nursing school doesn't really prepare you for the complexity of the workplace, time management and inter professional relationships.
  11. This is what I do ......Ask them another question. You could say "thats an interesting question , why are you asking?" If the person replies "I just wondered" or "I'm curious." Your next question could be "Are you always curious?". Then change the subject to the person's health care needs.
  12. Hi I am currently working on my PhD. I have published my literature review... was that ever a challenge. The next phase was to have my candidature reviewed by a panel of professors. I had to put forth a case to the panel that my research was valid and the panel then discussed if my research was going to be supported by the university. My candidature was upheld and I am working on my dissertation . I am up to the methodology section and am currently in the recruitment phase. So basically I am looking for research participants. Because I am doing qualitative research, my sample size is small. I have five participants and need to have ten. Its really stressful and I am working full time as an educator at the same time. My workplace does not seem to value the research that I am doing and I am sure that they have zero interest as it does not have a direct impact on their day to day practice. They can't see the big picture and that is what research is all about THE BIG PICTURE. I hope that I haven't rambled on too long about my story but doing a Phd is a lonely effort. If anyone wants to chat about their progress please feel free to contact me. Debi
  13. In Australia, where I am currently practicing as well as in Canada where I worked for many years there are tests that nursing students and registered nurses need to pass. In order to practice as a registered nurse a student nurse needs to successfully complete clinical competencies. One of the competencies is vital signs. There is a provision to "reasonably accommodate" a person who has identified that they have a disability but that does not override the duty of the educational institution to provide safe health care practitioners. For example would you want a pilot to fly a plane if he had a hearing impairment that affected his ability to hear the air traffic control instructions. If the nursing student has visual impairments or hearing impairments that can be corrected then there is no danger to practice safely. I too have a hearing impairment and have hearing aids. My impairment does not affect my ability to practice safely.
