How to cancel an interview after accepting another position?

Published

Just as the title says.. I'm a new grad RN that just accepted my first position. I start January 15th. I'm really happy with the job, as it's at the hospital that I wanted and the position I was most interested in. However, I have an interview this week at another hospital. I know I'm not interested in working there anymore. How do I politely cancel this interview without burning any bridges? It will be my 2nd interview with them so we already have a bit of a professional relationship, if you will. Most of our communication has been done via email. Is it okay to email her about this? What do I say?

TIA!

I had something similar happen to me last yr. I had an interview then a week later a walk thru of the unit was set up. In between that time I had another job interview and they offered it to me on the spot and I took it. I emailed the other place back and explained to them that they had offered me the job and as much as would have enjoyed working at their unit, I felt this position was a good fit as I knew others working their. Just keep it polite and they will appreciate that you took the time and notified them

I asked my HR dept head, he said that this type of thing is common - most unemployed professionals looking for work will apply for several positions. Now that you've accepted a position, informing them quickly is the main thing, as long as you're polite then you shouldn't have any problems whether you do it by email or by phone; but whether it will affect future opportunities with that organization depends on the management. It's their job, you're just doing it - got to look out for your own interests.

Go on the interview anyway. It is good practice and no interview comes with an obligation to accept an offer. Life happens. You aren't starting the next job for a month and it never hurts to have more than one potential on the horizon. I have had job offers disappear more than once after the offer was made and accepted. Stack your cards in your own favor. Go to the interview and make a good impression.

I had this happen the last time I was switching jobs. I emailed the person I was scheduled to interview with and said "thank you for your time, however I received an offer on Friday that I accepted today so I am no longer available for this position. I will definitely keep [prospective employer] in mind for the future."
