How can I volunteer in the UK?

Published

I am currently licensed as a RN in the US. I only worked for 8 months on my license there, and am thus unable to get licensed to work in the UK. I need to work or volunteer on my license for 4 more months before I am even qualified to apply here. How can I find a way to volunteer in the UK? I am here with my husband who is in the Air Force, I have already registered with the Red Cross for our base, but the process is lengthy and the base hospital does not request volunteers often. I really want to go back to work! Anybody have any idea how to volunteer here (or heck, even in Europe) using my US license?? Thanks!

Nurses generally do not volunteer in the UK as you would need to be registered with the NMC and as you have already commented you can't register with them because you do not have a year's experience so very much a catch 22.

Can you not return back to the US to gain this experience?

I am about to be in the same position. My husband, who is in the Air Force, has just gotten orders to the UK, and we are supposed to move in three months. I just graduated and passed my NCLEX 2 months ago and haven't gotten a job yet. How did this pan out for you?
