How bad is traffic from Waikiki to Tripler?

Published

I will be moving to Oahu shortly and will be working at Tripler. I've heard traffic is horrible (though, coming from So. Cal, I'm plenty used to it:banghead:). I plan to get a car once there and will be working nights. What's the best time to leave Waikiki to make it there by 7 pm? How's the return traffic at 7 am?

Anyone have any thoughts, suggestions, or opinions about working OB at Tripler?

Any travlers needing to get rid of a car? I'm looking for something very reliable...doesn't need to be pretty, but needs to be in good shape. I'd be willing to pay up to $2000.

I no longer live on Oahu, but yeah it can be pretty standstill.. but you will quickly learn the back ways to get there.. like getting off the like like and taking the side streets near the Wyland building, and so on.

As for a car.. if you can hit up the bases when you get there.. lots of people buy cars and then don't bother to ship them home when they transfer, or they can't afford the car they got.

It also depends if you are talking Waikiki or Diamond Head.. at in traffic Downtown Waikiki to Trippler took like 35 minutes. Good luck, and enjoy life on the island!!!

The later you leave, the faster you will get there. I wouldn't try going out before 6, traffic is really heavy. The shortest and fastest way is to go up Kalakaua, then jog over to Punahou, then cross H-1, take a right, and another right to get on the on ramp.

Alternative - go up McCully, but all the cabs and limos go that way too, so it can get busy. My favorite:

Take Kalakaua to Beretania, then turn right on Piikoi. If H-1 is totally blocked, keeping going down Beretania, it changes to King, then turns into Dillingham Blvd and takes you right into Tripler.

The other poster is right. The best place for cars is at Hickam AFB. Email me if you directions. There is a car lot there with used cars. You won't get much for $2000 though. It will most likely need repairs within a month or two. I think you can join Pentagon Federal credit Union if you work at Tripler. THey have really good rates for loans.

It isn't that bad if you are going to be working night shift. Days is another story! I lucked out because I lived in the Salt lake area which was only a five minute drive from the hospital.

I recently left Tripler after five years and I can tell you OB is really short staffed, but it is not that busy either. I am very familiar with the subject because I was the night house supervisor and I never had problems finding them staff because, like I said, they were never busy. Usually it was an RN and LPN on nights and they handled it well.

Wow...a flood of memories here. I was stationed as a 1st Lt (RN) at Tripler in the early 90's and worked OB. At that time it was incredibly busy. Even back then the traffic was horrible! Good luck....it was an amzing experience and wonderful place to work and live.

heh i think a lot of people misread your post and think you're working days...

getting to tripler by 7pm should be no problem. rush hour in that direction is done by 5-6ish. once you get on the freeway from waikiki it's about a 10-15 minute drive to tripler if not less.

coming home in the morning is where it's gonna suck. you'll be catching ALL the early morning rush hour traffic headed into town. that would prolly be about 30-45 min on the freeway plus however long it takes you on the surface streets after that (can really vary depending on what part of waikiki). you're prolly better off killing time a bit before heading home. by about 9 or 10ish the traffic into town is pretty light.
