12 hour Shifts?

Published

What type of schedule do most OR nurses have? Do you do 3- 12hrs in the OR and how about PACU?

Thanks for the input, I didn't think about standing in one place for so long or doing all my own lifting.

I work 12hr day shift, I tried nights but couldn't do it, too much down time during the night and the sleep pattern killed me.

We are equally split between 8, 10, and 12 hour shifts in our OR. I prefer 8 hour shifts at this point in my life. I'm able to pick my children up at school at the end of their day and still have some energy left to make dinner and spend some time with them before it's time to tuck them in to bed. Works for me:) I do envy the 12hr nurse who get the extra 2 days off but after 8 hours of busting my butt I'm so ready to walk out that door

And crawling on the floor occasionally, dodging equipment and cords, being on your feet in one spot for hours when you're scrubbed. We also handle all our own heavy patients...no lift team comes to the OR. We handle our own codes as well.

I lost 5 pounds without even trying when I first started circulating..I'll wear a pedometer at times and I'll log about 5 miles a shift.:chuckle

That is pretty impressive! Guess you don't need to stop off at the gym after work with that workout!!:chuckle

My facility has 8, 10, and 12 hour shifts. 8 and 10 are typically day and 12 is typically second shift (lunch relief then finish any running rooms). Our rooms are staggered in shutdown times.

Most of the OR staff work five 8hr shifts the 0645-1515 shift. But we do have 10hr and 12hr shifts. I was working the 8hr but now i work 12hr. 12hr days are hard but its nice having all the other days off.

We have 8h and 10h shifts, but they're all built into our master schedule. So you have a week of 4 10's with one day off, or a week of 5 8's. (we also have weekends and evenings in our master). We don't have any 12h shifts.

Our OR has a ton of different shifts. The main shifts are 8 hours: day, evening and deep nights. I work 12's on the weekends on a two day alternative shift. This means, work Saturday and Sunday 7p - 7a and they will give you full time pay (or pretty close to it) and full time benefits. It's pretty nice when you have kids.
