I did 12 hour shifts in the OR for a few years because of family needs, but it was rough. Now I do 8 hour shifts, and it's so much better. It sounds great to just work 3 days a week, and it really is helpful if you have a lot of demands outside of work, but OR nursing is so physically demanding, I found 12 hour shifts to be just too hard.
And crawling on the floor occasionally, dodging equipment and cords, being on your feet in one spot for hours when you're scrubbed. We also handle all our own heavy patients...no lift team comes to the OR. We handle our own codes as well. You'd be surprised how hard O.R. nurses work, including lots of heavy lifting.
I lost 5 pounds without even trying when I first started circulating..I'll wear a pedometer at times and I'll log about 5 miles a shift.:chuckle
I work 11a-11pm and LOVE it! I have 4 kids at home and the 7-3 was KILLING me. I also prefer not getting up before dawn anymore, so this shift is great. More of a chance for some down time anyway, but not this last week. It doesn't matter anyway. I'd rather jam out my week and then enjoy the rest with my family, or even some alone time while they are in school!

What type of schedule do most OR nurses have? Do you do 3- 12hrs in the OR and how about PACU?
