12 hour shifts question

Published

Hi all,

i recently just just passed my boards and will be working as an lpn for the first time. I got hired at a nursing home working 12 hour shifts.

The DON mentioned that I'll be working 3 12 hour shifts and every other Saturday. My question is, for the weeks that I work Saturday, does that count towards the 3 shifts? Or is that a separate shift? So is it 6 12 hour shifts per biweekly or 7?

thanks all!

"Yes that's an extra shift. 7. It makes the hours come out right for a 2 week pay."

Hi loriangel14, wouldn't the extra shift make it over 40 hours per week? If the Saturday was a 12 hour shift it would be 42 hours per week. Unless it was an 8 hour Saturday that would bring it to an even 40.

I'll reemphasize that you may wish to ask your future DON for clarification regarding your work hours. None of us work at your place of employment and cannot provide firsthand information on how the scheduling works there.

For the nurses at my workplace, we work every other weekend and our checks usually amount to 72 hours per two-week pay period. For instance:

Week 1: Monday, Friday, Saturday = 3 12 hour shifts (36 hours)

Week 2: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday = 3 12 hour shifts (36 hours)
