12 hour shifts cut.

Has anybody ever worked in a facility that had 12 hr shifts, but then changed them to 8 hr shifts? How did it affect all the personnel involved? I also heard that you could apply for unemployment if you got bumped from your job or offered another shift you could not work.

I thougth about working 8 hour shifts. I just to think going to a job 5 days a week would be a disadvantage, especially if the department/unit you work is a stressful one.
It's different strokes for different folks, I guess. Personally, I like 12-hour shifts because they enable me to have four days off per week.

With the 8-hour shifts, I'd have to go to work five days per week and have only two days off. I would hate having to go to work almost every single day of the week, and it feels that way when I'm working 8-hour days.

I work casual in a small hospital (in addition to my regular job). The hospital got a new director of nurse who, among the first things she did was cut all 12's to 8's. The was a massive exodus of nurses to other hospitals and we ended up with a bunch of travel nurses. Luckily the new manager saw the writing on the wall and came to her seances and re-instated 12s for anyone who wanted them.

Personally if they get rid of 12 I would immediately start looking for a new job and if the whole nursing industry did away with them I would be going into another line of work. I know a large number of male nurse for whom this is also true.

Well found out that they are eliminating a full-time 1st shift position on my floor when they go to 8hr shifts. I don't have seniority so I'm probably out.:crying2: I'm not the only one either. There are probably a dozen or so people, maybe more, that will be looking for new jobs. They say its cost effective and will save time finding replacements for call offs, but I think they are just weeding out the people they don't like. I can't go back to 2nd shift. I have 4 kids and its hard enough to spend time with them as it is with school and sports. Can't take a part time shift, wouldn't be able to afford health insurance and buy food at the same time. I think if I don't get the position (even though it's my position to begin with), it's time to pull out the old resume. Thanks for all the replies.
