Hospitals with Preceptorships in the NICU in Miami

Published

HI I am very stressed right now because I don't know how to look for hospitals that offer preceptorships in Miami. I was wondering if anyone knew which hospitals offered it or if there were any hospitals in Miami who are hiring NICU nurses with no experience.

*I would also like to know what the average starting salary for a nurse is in Florida.

Please Help!

Hi there, welcome to allnurses!!

Find out what some BIG hospitals are in Miami or the surrounding area. Seeing as how it's a big city, they should have a number of large teaching hospitals. Call the hospitals and ask to talk with a nurse recruiter. Ask if they hire new grads into the NICU. If they do hire new grads in the NICU, ask about what type of orientation they offer (you want a minimum of 12 weeks, with didactics).

That's the best way to get the information you need, straight from the source. You could also maybe try to post this in the Florida forum and some people might have a good idea of what hospitals you could look at.

As far as the salary, check out www.salary.com.

Good luck to you!

Miami Children's has a great NICU, i believe it is the biggest NICU in Miami and takes the most acute patients.

I was looking into Miami Children's and Jackson Memorial but they didn't seem to have much information on the website. Thank you both for the advice.

Take it one step at a time. Before you can do a preceptorship in the NICU, you have to go to nursing school! Some schools have preceptorships right before graduation in the unit of your choice, but not all. Either way, most NICUs that hire new grads have extensive orientation programs to train you. You'll get exposure to the NICU in nursing school during your obstetrics or pediatrics rotations, but during nursing school you will learn about all the major areas of medicine, not just NICU.

Go to http://www.salary.com and look up your zip code to find what the current salaries are in your area for nurses. Pay varies widely across the country.

The biggest thing for you to do right now is to apply to nursing school. Do not go to LPN school if you want to work in the NICU - you need your RN, so you must go to either a community college and get an associate's degree in nursing, or to a four-year university and get a bachelor's degree in nursing. Go to the websites for your local colleges to find out more about admissions and things like that.

Good luck!

Well I'm currently a freshman in a University and I will be graduating with a bachelor's in science. My University has a nursing school and hopefully I will be lucky enough to be accepted my junior year. I have not asked them if they offer a preceptorship but I will do so soon enough. Thanx for your help... I am getting ahead of myself.
