Hospitals and pay around Miami

Published

Hi,

I will be graduating May 2006 (and it won't come too soon). Planning to relocate to the Miami area. Last week, spring break, I talked to the nursing recruiter at Aventura hospital - he said they have a 6 week classroom preparation followed by a 6-12 month preceptorship for new grads, this sounded really good to me. Plus, the hospital looked really nice inside and outside. I didn't ask about pay and didn't have time to visit any other hospitals.

Could you all please share the good, the bad, and the ugly, on Miami area hospitals, and if you know, how much they start new grads at?

Thanks,

Alex

I currently work at Baptist Hospital in Miami (Kendall area). I started as a new grad a year ago. My starting rate was 21.60/hour and shift differential is between 4-6$ an hour. Orientation for me was 12 weeks because I was hired on the pediatric floor. Med/surge floors have an 8 week orientation, ICU's have either 12 or 16 weeks, I'm not sure. I have a few friends that work in Aventura Hospital and I have not heard them say anything negative about it, And I belive their rate is the same. We have manmy hodpitals to choose from in the South Florida area and I believe they all have more or less the same starting rate. It all depends what type of hospital u want to work in, a teaching hospital, or a smaller hospital like Aventura. I hoep this helps, If you have any more questions feel free to ask

HI I was just wondering if 21.60 is average pay in Miami for an RN with a BSN?

I am in NJ and the average pay is 29.00 so it seems a little low?

thanks

Hey emab, not sure if you noticed, but the year of the OP was 2005. Seems this thread is pretty old. Not sure if the pay has changed much since then though.

I have a BSN, 2 yrs experience and just applied to several hospitals in Miami, ICU, my offers have a starting salary of 24-25 with a $4-6 shift diff. Hope this helps!

So what was the outcome? Did you get the salary you wanted?

Baptist is still offering 21.60 with the 4 and 6 differential for new nurses, I start there in august...

as far as NJ offering 29, there are a lot of things that may go into that, maybe they have higher health insurance rates that requires you to make more money, i dunno, but making more an hour doesnt necesarily mean after health insurance and taxes you will make more a year?

The South Florida area hospitals pay around the same for new grads---low 20s. However, I do not recommend Aventura for many reasons. Not a very safe place to practice if you value your license. They have had too many malpractice lawsuits (safety issues again), and had lost their accreditation in the past r/t to preventable patient deaths. It was less that 2 years ago that they got shut down (except for the ER), and during the legal fallout the nurses were blamed for not paying close enough attention to the patients. They claim to have made improvements but the place is still not very safe, and it has nothing to do with the abilities of the nurses there.

It was last Fall, 2006, when Aventura was closed (except for ER emergencies) by JCAHO. There were a few patients that had excessive restraints -- one patient eventually died while in restraints and being overdosed on Dilantin.

I remember having my clinicals there on the telemetry and med-surg floors when JCAHO came before and after the incident. The nurses, esp. at that time, were swamped and burned out --- having to deal with 7-8 patients and JCAHO down their backs....

So yeah, I agree, no on Aventura.

Oh ok... what is the average yearly salary I forgot Florida has no State income tax that is good! Does anyone know how fast you can advance to be a head nurse? Do you need a masters?

thanks

Bad thing about having no state income tax: employers use it to justify paying you less.
