Hospital Rescinded Job Offers to all New Grads

Published

A local hospital in Raleigh, NC, Rex Hospital, last week rescinded all job offers they made to new grads. It also sounds like they are not hiring any new hires at all.

By doing this, Rex hospital has basically deprived these new RNs of six months of work and experience. All of the hospitals in the area are no longer hiring new grads. The next set of new grad positions won't open until May.

I am shocked that they did this, and can name at least 10 people from my Dec. '08 class that it affects. I have to share. If you are a new grad looking for a job in the Raleigh area, you should be aware of this action by this hospital.

Although we know the job situation is not great, this is still shocking. I hope those affected by this are able to pick up the pieces.

The January positions were filled in December and before. The new grad fellowships are six months of classes and preceptorship so they're only offered twice a year. I know there are openings for the May group at WakeMed.

I hadn't heard about Rex, though. Any idea WHY they rescinded the offers??

i am not a big fan of rex hospital at all. i had originally applied there to work as a tech in the ER while in nrsg school and declined a job offer after i toured and spoke with a few employees.

i have also been an inpatient there and was not thrilled with my care.

they are very concerned with their "magnet" status and their employee morale and treatment of patients has declined. we get many transfers from there, both nurses and patients. many diploma RNs/ADNs are leaving d/t being treated suboptimally for not having a BSN.

there are sooo many community colleges, vocational schools and universities in this area. i know many RNs and LPNs (new grads) who are out of work or at the same non-nursing job they were at before they passed boards bc they cannot find one here in raleigh. i have two friends who have been let go by rex. one a new grad RN for MSICU, and a new grad LPN for their rehab facility. they gave them very little notice.

duke/durham regional is hiring, though.

Yes, me too. It is hard, as some of them have families they need to support. I posted this because I think it should be considered when applying for a position at this hospital in the future. I am amazed that none of the local News stations have done a story on it. This hospital had a great reputation, but it is going down hill. This is what comes of caring more about a profit margin than people, your employees or your patients.

Yes, WakeMed has May positions. Unfortunately, it doesn't help any of my classmates out now. :( One finally spoke with someone at WakeMed who said they could apply for the May new grad positions there, but that there would nothing to distinguish them from the May grads. It's sad. These are people who have their RNs. I can name no one in my class who didn't pass NCLEX the first time that I know of.

I can't say for sure why Rex made this decision. It sounded like it came from their board of directors or stockholders or something, but I don't know. I know a number of the managers were not happy with what they were doing.

i'm sad for your friends. :(

i hope they are able to find jobs! tell them to check out raleigh community if they don't want to drive to durham. i know raleigh community will take new grads, they might not get the "new grad fellow" training, but it's a foot in the door.

That stinks! Hopefully they will find other opportunites quickly.
