My hospital won't give my unit part time positions, but will give the other units in the hospital part time positions. I work 3 12 hr nights, and really want to go part time.
I don't know the reason for this and honestly I don't care. I think it's completely wrong, but I havent worked there a long time and I'm not sure what to do. Go to the union? Write a letter? Talk to the DON?
Any ideas?

being new there, i'm not sure i'd make such a fuss about it.
you could talk with your DON, but s/he wouldn't be in a position to do anything.
you could always try transferring to another unit:
or, finding a job elsewhere.
best of luck to you!

It seems obvious to me that they won't offer part-time positions because they are short staffed. If that's the case and you really want to work part-time perhaps change departments or jobs.

Often places do not offer part time cause the benefits are too expensive. They want fulltime commitments for bennies. Any way you can go PRN? I love it.
BTW: What is their reasoning; don't you think you should at least ask????Seems you don't have much choice. Either stay full time or change units. OR you can make a union grievance, and see what that may net you.
I wish you the best whatever comes.

If you have a union, you have a contract. Most contracts spell out precisly the mix of part time/full time/per diem positions.
