Hospital based training

I didn't hear that, but I'm surprised that they are waiting on some type of legislation to start a program. For some reason, I thought that Texas already had one or two diploma programs, one being the Baptist Health System in San Antonio. I may be really mistaken, though.

I think it would be a great idea. I know a lot of people who would be great nurses that are having a hard time getting into nursing school because of how competitive they are. I am lucky to have a great GPA, but I don't have to work while going to school, and I don't have children. I am also blessed with a really supportive husband. A friend of mine, however, is a single parent who works full-time and goes to school full-time. I honestly don't know how she does it. She is very organized, but her GPA isn't the highest due to the amount of time she has to study. She has about a 3.2, but I don't think that will "get you in" around the DFW area.

I am really going to cross my fingers that they start more nursing programs in this area. They really need them. It is a shame to keep potentially great nurses waiting years to get into school. It's also a shame when people have to pay tuition to take a class over for a higher grade when they passed the first time. I will look to see if I can find out more info about this. By the way, I am also interested in knowing more about the deal with hospital-based programs in Texas. I don't know why I just assumed that Texas had them already.

The program was on Channel 5 news, and it was about the program at Texas Health Resources. Several posters here have been in that program and speak highly of it.

My mom said she saw this story on change 8 news. That to address the nursing shortage in the DFW area and the % of student admits to schools. That the hospital was waiting for some bill to pass in the Texas congress to start up a hospital based nurse training program. I have searched high and low and have not found this story. But my mom says she saw it last Weds. on the 5 o'clock news.

Anyone else hear this story?

Why was hospital based RN training done away with anyway?

I am actually in that class that was on the news... By hospital based, they mean that they use their own hospitals for clinicals. We are actually students at El Centro college. The grant that they're trying to get is for more funding. We all work somewhere in THR's system, and I believe that they want to be separate from ECC and for it's students to not be required to work.

Those are the programs that I was thinking of, but thought that maybe I was mistaken. What is the difference between these programs and the one they are wanting to start? Do the other two programs go through a college or university?

In Lubbock, there's a nursing program at University Medical Center (Texas Tech University) and a separate one at the Covenant Medical Center School of Nursing (hospital-based). Both are excellent hospitals.

i see this is from 2007...are there any in the Amarillo area? Lubbock is 3 (or so) hrs one way) from here. I can't drive that far daily nor can i/we afford to relocate our family down there. My hubby and i have decided to both go for our RN (something i've wanted to do for a long time but life got in my way, and he wants a career change)

If you look at the accredited programs on the Texas Board of Nursing website, they list only 2 diploma programs in Texas (Lubbock and San Antonio). My mom has been a nurse for 35+ years. It seems that years ago many hospitals had their own programs (they liked to train their nurses a certain way). It doesn't seem to be that way now ... everyone wants you to come with experience. I'm taking prereqs at a local community college. That seems to be the only way to go these days. Good luck!

i am taking my pre-req's this spring then hopefully I can get into the ADN program at Amarillo College Fall 2011
