Hospital based Midwifery training

Published

Hello All

Im currently in my 3rd year of nursing and Im wanting to become a midwife. I plan on applying at the end of this year to do that, but a friend of mine recently said that somewhere in Australia (think Melb or Perth) teach midwifery on the job. Just wondering if anyone knew or heard about this. Any information would be good. Also I will be doing my GNP next year and am still slightly undecided as to whether to study mid full time, part time or just wait until after my GNP. Any advise would be good also.

Regards

Hi,

In Melbourne you apply to the hospital's that have midwifery students and also to the university that it is aligned with. Generally you work 2 days a week at the hospital, I'm not sure how much contact time is with the university.

It would be a good idea to contact university's where you live and ask them which hospitals their students work in and contact hospitals that you are interested in and asking them which university's they are aligned with.

There will be a midwifery educator at the hospitals and she will know which universities her students attend.

Good luck,

If only other courses operated like that. I assume you are paid for the two days at the hospital?

yes! lucky buggers :D

It's my understanding that Midi programs are run via a university, that co-ordinate your "employment"/clinical placement with a Hospital. I believe it's a Grad Dip. (well, it is through NSW uni's, visit Post Grad Search at UAC) I've never heard of any being run solely through the hospital.

I think that if you studied your Midi FT (and some places only offer it FT), you wouldn't be able to do your New-Grad (or you would have to do it part-time). Personally (and this is just me!) but i've just finished my new grad, and i think the pressure of that first year and studying FT at the same time would have done my head in! However, if you think its the best plan for you, then go for it!!

best of luck with what you decide, if you do happen to find info on it then post back, would be handy to know!

The Charles Sturt University offers a hospital-based one year Post Grad Diploma of Midwifery.

Generally in my hospital they take 2 Midwifery students per semester. They work 0.8 or 1.0FTE and study distance learning. The requirement is normally one year post grad nursing so you have clinical nursing experience.

I'm with you Parko. I have had my fill of university type study! I'm just into my second year myself...
