Hi everyone!

I took the practical nursing program in Ontario before for one semester. The timing wasn't right for me, but unfortunately, it was too late to drop out of the program. Needless to say, I did not get stellar marks. I'm now thinking I still really want to persue nursing. I would, however, prefer to study the BScN program this time around, instead of the RPN program. Would I be able to get into the RN program if I upgraded my highschool prerequistes, even though I already studied practical nursing? I did not have the prerequisite required for the RN program when I applied to the RPN program.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

If you wish to apply to a BSN program you will have to complete the prerequisites( these will be post secondary courses) for the program first. These are the marks they will be looking at. Check with the program that you want to apply to. They don't all have the same requirements.

Here in Alberta the Pre Reqs are simply high school courses. Im sure they only look at the Pre Reqs.

Every one has made their mistakes. If you want to persue nursing go for it!

I'm starting my pre reqs on monday. Let me tell you I messed up a lot!! I have sooo much upgrading on my plate... If I can go for it. You DEFINITELY can!!! Good luck! :)

I'm in Ontario. I'm not too sure how it works here. How do you take the highschool prerequisite courses when you have already graduated years ago? Based on the statement "I messed up alot," I'm assuming you took post secondary courses that you did not do well in? Will you still have to send in the transcript for those courses?

First, the OP needs to find their high school transcripts -- do they meet the required marks.

Second, what if any post secondary academic courses have been taken, if any.

Looks like there might be a bit of upgrading required.

Only a the school can tell the OP what needs to be done to be competitive. All I know is that in AB, the marks have to be very high for the BScN programmes locally.

You can take your prereqs AT the school you plan on doing your nursing program at. High school marks have nothing to do with it unless you're a new high school grad and you took the required Math, English Chem and Bio in high school. Contact the College you wish to attend directly.

I'm pretty sure you can upgrade your marks by taking them at adult school. I could be wrong, though. :S Talk to the admission person at the College/University you would like to attend.

There are some colleges that offer Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) upgrading. Another option would be to get into a pre-health sciences program that focuses on preparing you for the BScN program. Check your local community college and see what they offer.

I am in the same boat. Am in Ont. and am missing 2 science pre-reqs from high school. I am now going back to night school for my Gr. 12 (university level) chemistry course, and taking Gr. 12 Biology through ILC.

I believe every academic institution is different in what they accept/want, so I'd check with them. I know at Algonquin and Univ. of Ottawa, you need the high school pre-reqs regardless of whether or not you have a univ. degree or college courses.

Hope that helps!

By being in the same boat, do you mean you also have an unfavorable recent transcript from a related program?

No, not an unfavourable transcript. I don't have the pre-reqs. Sorry if that was confusing!
