Hi there, I'm from Ontario, and RPN stands for Registered Practical Nurse here. We don't call them LPN's here. I'm pretty sure most of the replies weren't referring to Registered Psychiatric Nursing.

I think you may have been misinformed. I actually know someone from George Brown College that has been put on probation. And after repeating a failed course, a guy from GBC was told that they couldn't guarantee him a spot for the next semester. Apparently, many of them have also complained about the awful prof's. I'm guessing the grass isn't greener on the other side. If you're looking for a school that doesn't have that rule, I suggest you talk to someone at Seneca. I've never heard a student from Seneca mention it. I also heard the RPN program at Seneca is the easiest, but I'm really not sure how anyone would know that unless they've attended all the other schools. Perhaps they compared notes:confused: I have no idea! Well, good luck with whatever decision you make. No matter what school you choose, the nursing curriculum can be very tough.

I just saw this reply and I hope you don't mind me asking --- did you get accepted to a school in Ontario?

I really hope you didn't think I was asking the question because I was being condescending. I really want to be a nurse and I'm willing to spend more years in school if it means I'll have more/better options in the field. My friend is currently in the third semester of the RPN program. There are way more students in the RPN program and it seems very difficult to find so many professors that can actually teach. Most of the professors are in the field, but they probably couldn't teach if their lives depended on it. She worked hard, yet barely passed the second semester. She told me that the students have complained many times about the professors. She also told me nearly half of the students from the second semester didn't make it to the third semester (this includes some students that have already graduated with honors from a different faculty). I highly doubt the reason they didn't make it was because they slacked off, and I wouldn't be surprised if the RN program isn't even that much more difficult. I'm sure you worked hard to come out of that program alive. Congratulations

Thanks for all the replies. Would you recommend studying the RPN or the RN program? Do you think it's worth it to begin the RN program in 2012?

I pretty much wrote a whole 'essay' as a response to this, but decided it wasn't worth it for me to stoop that low and post it. I suggest you practice what you preach. Maybe after some soul searching, you'll realize that it's not your place to judge people you don't know. No offense.

So I've been hearing a lot of rumors going on that RN's are being replaced by RPN's. Are they being bumped up to management positions or just getting laid off? I'm wanting to pursue a degree in nursing. Is this a good idea, or should I just get my diploma? I would rather finish school in two years and get a job instead of wasting more time and money and end up being jobless.

By being in the same boat, do you mean you also have an unfavorable recent transcript from a related program?

I'm pretty sure you can upgrade your marks by taking them at adult school. I could be wrong, though. :S Talk to the admission person at the College/University you would like to attend.

Does that mean western doesn't care about diplomas from colleges??? only degrees? And do you mean ryerson and york don't care about your previous secondary as long as they are not related to nursing? *by the way, she actually took Esthetician, not cosmetology... not sure if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the reply, but the thing is, here in Canada the prerequisite for the BScn program are your high school marks: your bio, chem, math, english, and two other advanced level courses. She took that before the cosmetology program and she's not even sure whether to send in her transcript for that since it seems irrelevant to the progam. She'll probably just call the schools to find. I only took the RPN program, so I don't know.

If you already took another program several years ago (not related to nursing) and didn't do well in it even though you did extremely well in your high school prerequisites. So here's what happened: my friend got over 85% average in high school. She decided to study a cosmetology program at a college in Ontario. She quickly realized it wasn't what she wanted to do but continued until she graduated because she didn't want her parents to rub it in. Her parents were upset when she decided thats what she wanted to study and they believed she was making a huge mistake that she would later regret. Anyway, she said that she had some descent marks, some good marks, and some awful ones, and her overall average was below a B. She sort of graduated in '07. I say sort of because she didn't bother to complete her placement that was required for graduation. She's now certain that she wants to be a nurse. Is there any hope for her?

I'm not too concerned about how much I make, but I would really love to travel around the world (not just work in Canada and the U.S.). Would you have to get a degree in nursing to work in, say, China? or Japan? Any advice, please?

What courses were your top 6 courses? I'm so surprised that you did not get in with 82% (I'm assuming they were all uni. level courses). How many colleges did you apply to? When did you apply? I'm pretty sure before 2010 you only needed a min. of 75% to get in to the BScN program.
