Hey Everyone,
Currently in the Navy but a native Coloradoan. I'm preparing to come out and go back to school...and hopefully become a Nurse. I'm hoping to apply for CU Denver, UNC and possibly Regis. I've done a lot of the research on the classes and the schools and had this whole plan...and then I had a random thought... I've heard that school programs have to meet a quota for diversity. Will being previously Active Duty help with the application process even though I don't have a 4.0? I have a 3.3 right now (horrible mistakes from the past...that are being corrected slowly but surly). Any input? Thought I'd at least ask.
Thanks!

Hi Navycorpsmangirl, welcome to allnurses! :)
I was just accepted into the UNC traditional program. The lowest GPA accepted this year was a 3.67. UNC also requires additional pre-reqs (Biochem, Pharm, Patho, CNA, and a specific nutrition class) that CU and Regis don't. As far as I know, diversity doesn't play a part in UNC's application process, it is strictly GPA. CU and Regis may be different, but these are all in demand programs that can pick and chose because they have a variety of diverse people applying anyway.
I would suggest starting with your lowest grades, especially if some are weighed more heavily then others, and go from there. You may also want to consider widening your scope, such as the Denver School of Nursing, and the Community Colleges around town with a bridge program later on.
Good luck to you, I know the application process can be a daunting.

I am a navy vet (intel) and was just accepted to CU :)
I don't know how CU and Regis select from many competetive applicants - CU touts grades and essay. You have learned a lot from your experiences in the navy (you have worked with a very diverse population, teamwork, leadership, flexibility, and pt care if you're a corpsman). That counts for a lot!!
Good Luck to you!!

Definitely apply to Regis. They will value your service and experience.
Thank you all for your responses! Sometimes its hard not get all flustered about the details, there's a lot to think about! I think I will strongly consider Regis. The only downfall is the prereqs are slightly different than UNC and CU.. as far as the religious classes, but I think that some may fall into prereqs for the other schools as well. Again, thank you for the responses!
